I found a question outraging and then noticed many people agreed?

Some days ago in this site someone confessed they didn't feel bad about african starving children and in a way thought it would be better if they didn't survive.
Some of the reasons was that the world is already overpopulated as it is. Oh, and also that "our" resources are too little to share as it is.
It's a valid confession and interesting point, specially if you consider the asker could be very young and naive.
But then it amazed me how lots of people started agreeing with this. I don't know since when the world's resources became our resources. I don't get it. I hope I misread.
Did you get to see it? What do you think?

They are right. All people outside the US are using up our oxygen. 2
You missunderstood what she meant. (explain) 2
They're wrong. They are worse than nazis. 5
Don't blame them. They are arrogant due to their ignorance. 6
It's just being objective and logic. 6
The media has Americans totally brainwashed. 6
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I didn't vote. Because the only one I would chose is an incomplete sentence. That being said, global overpopulation is something that all of us should be concerned about. The fact that children in Africa are starving is an indicator that this is a real problem. The land that they are on cannot sustain them. They simply can't grow enough food to feed everyone.

We (meaning those of use in the United States)on the other hand, can. We can grow enough food to feed ourselves and share with those counties that are in need. Why don't we do this you ask? Because it would upset the status quo, and the super rich and multinational corporations would not continue to be the super rich. Our Government happily goes along this path paying out farm subsidies each year. This is all done in order to maintain a stable economy.

Now if some people could get over themselves(Congress) and enact a law allowing farmers to grow as much food as they can. Setting aside a portion to be donated to charity, and giving the farmer a tax break for that portion. It would maintain the economy and set us up as the saviors of the downtrodden. Yes, I understand it wouldn't be as simple as this. But it would be a good place to start.

I tend to think that it is very wrong to generalise when talking about Africa. Some people in Africa are hungry because there are wars and disputes, others because the climate is unsuitable for farming and many other reasons. One of them is that the westernisation of societies have made cost of living very high and it's difficult for those people to have a suitable standard of living.
Africa is made up of many countries, each facing it's own distinct problem and we should never generalise when talking about Africa.

I realize what you are saying. But I believe I addressed that with the statement "They simply can't grow enough food to feed everyone."

Yes I've noticed but the problems are more complex than that - the logistic, corruption, just to name these two. It's not simply about not being able to grow enough. Believe me I know what I'm talking about.

            Your not getting it.

            I agree with you.

Did I not say " Yes, I understand it wouldn't be as simple as this."

The poor in third world countries or undeveloped nations are not the ones exhausting the world's resources it's the developed nations that greedily use and waste our resources. If there was a way to provide all the food that we waste or let go bad to these people you would be surprised how far it would go . I'm an American and see us as MOSTLY entitled greedy and incredibly unappreciative of the resources that we have available.

    • Wich one would you vote and how would you complete the sentence?

It's a complex matter, but at least (for me) your heart is in the right place.
I'm glad I asked this because I was really begining to think it was common for people to think the other horrible stuff.

I found it particularly confusing that they didn't get that the ones contaminating the Earth are us, with our cities, computers, cars...

I think it would be funny if the people who don't care about starving children in africa were to get sick and die themselves. Just because we live in developed countries doesn't mean our lives are any more precious or valuable than other poverty stricken people in faraway lands.

I highly encourage everyone who thinks over population is a problem to take a gun to their head, as opposed to wanting others to die.
Everyone on earth could comfortably fit into the USA, and so long as no greed or selfishness was involved and we managed the resources right, everyone would be fed.
Will that ever happen? No. Would it be nice if people stopped being greedy pigs? Surely.

Those of us born in civilized societies are very fortunate. It's pretty much all luck so don't blame people for simply existing.

I don't. I thank the responsible people of civilized societies for only having children they can support.

You think starving children are the problem. The problem is actually Africans fucking. The solution is AIDS because it is s disincentive to fuck. The problem will never go away by giving away food. This is only adding fuel to the fire. You must use precious resources to only give away condoms to women. (African men are too stupid to use them.).

PS. Starving to death isn't so bad. I plan to starve myself to death someday when I am in hospice.

Honestly my limited empathy doesn't allow for me to care either way if an African starves to death or not. I don't wish it upon them but I wouldn't lift a finger to help them either.
