I find it strange when people clap after singing/playing silent night

I'm sure you know the evergreen Christmas carol "Silent Night". For some reason, I always felt strange when I hear people clap after the song is sung/played. Of course naturally when someone performs, you applaud them, and Silent Night is no exception. However, for some strange reason, it felt strange to me when people did after Silent Night. For example, I was seeing that Alvin & The Chipmunks Christmas special and I found it odd when the crowd applauded after someone finished playing Silent Night on a harmonica. Of course it's what you're supposed to do, but it felt weird.

It's probably because of the stark contrast between a calm, serenading lullabyesque song and the loud gunfirelike noise that ensues.

I think in this context, there is no "normal". I can see where you are coming from, however I find applause after the song in question neither strange nor not strange, if you catch my drift.
