I find it so annoying that extreme metal is so popular!

Is this normal at all?

I have a mate at school (actually, I hate him now) that's CONSTANTLY trying (and failing) to get me into extreme metal - and it's just not music, in any sense of the word. They say it takes a lot of talent to play it, but regardless it's so annoyingly noisy that it makes me depressed. He played about six tracks off an album and all sounded exactly the same: guitars that sound like drills and explosive, out-of-sync drums. The vocals were like a dinosaur having a tantrum. It sounds so immature, so pointless. It's about nothing.

Regualar 80s new wave metal is completely fine though, because it sounds TUNEFUL and structured. Prog metal is fine, speed metal is fine, and a couple of other classic metals are listenable. I don't listen to this genre all the time but when I'm in the mood for it, I like it.

Yet I seriously can't stand extreme metal. Thrash, death, doom, grind, black... to me they're all noise despite the apparant "talent". I'm sorry but I outright refuse to enjoy it, because when I hear it I just hear a random rampage. And then it gets worse. By combining these horrible metal forms together or adding "core" on the end. I don't get it, at all. Really.

For some reason there also seems to be people that listen to both classical and this stuff. It's... ridiculous. They're basically saying that classical and, let's say, black deathcore (WTH?), are as good as each other.

Then there's the logos of these bands that are like scribbles. It's sad.

I fail to understand why this genre is so popular and why people consider it good music. I fail to understand why there's so many extreme metal artists.

Plus, there's an article on wikiHow called "How to appreciate Death Metal" which is unfortunately the most liked music-related article on the site. This is making me miffed. I mean, what's wrong with Queen or Pink Floyd, or anything else that sounds like MUSIC?!

And no, I'm not getting into this tasteless crap, even if I'm "wrong". I just want to know if my opinion is normal. I hope some people agree. At least a couple would be nice.

  • Ignore the sense of ignorance to alter life. Embrace the beauty from inside. We are one.. We are the strength of the universe at heart. Construct the light, implore of the energy and bestow the understanding.

You know what I think the problem is for extreme metal? I think that there is just not enough silence in it. my fav music is hard rock u know led zep, gunsnroses, even iron maiden, p flyod some jeff airplane, etc. but I went to a classical concert with my boyfriend yesterday (cuz he's a total classical geek :P) and what amazed me was what the rests/pauses in the music does to the listening experience. that's also why i think i love led zep so much cuz they can go from real soft to really metal gritty in an instant, dazed and confused is an awesome example.

  • It's not too popular, only among emo-posers/hipsters.

Everyone has different taste in music no matter how shitty it is, but I'm quite confused now due to the fact metal isn't popular right now. Only the shitty rap and pop, unless you mean "screamo" then I quite agree with you.

  • You really cant comprehend the fundemental nature of metal music can you? Let me show you why you are utterly irrational and yes,WRONG.First off,I agree, pink floyed and other bands are AMAMZING.However,Extreme metal takes a high level of effort and TALENT to play.
    Drums:Often tecnical,medlodic,fast,and groovy
Vocals:Growl, scream, sing, screeth, which in many cases takes more talent than OPERA to do.
Guitar:Need I explain more? Its a main essence in the song itself.
Lyrics:You think its pointless? Heres some Djent-metal lyrics (Djent means polyryhthmic beats and downtunes guitars)
"We've all been blinded, subjects to visual misinformation,a systimatic, denial of the crystalline,to see the fine grain,to re-unite the hidden words and context of paralell truth, devoid of fragmentation!"
If you think this is pointless, you seriously need help lol.Now lets talk about the basic princibles of the extreme metal song
The bass and drums ARE the song, they make the song what it is,the bass keeps the beat, while the drummer IS the beat, they work together to form the MUSIC! While the vocalist, and "other"instruments add atmosphere, emotion, and complex beats into the MUSIC.Now lets get a bit more complicated ;).The guitarist often, how do I put this?...He kindof steers the song into itself to make it sound legit,if that makes sense lol.Meanwhile the vocals define the meaning and intent of the song. The vocals give off the essence of were the lyrics are coming from,if its singing, its often sad, happy, joyfull or wise.If its screaming, its often depressed, hatefull,or just an ecstasy of rage.If its growling or screething it often has to do with religion, dark lyrics, metaphysics, politics, and other abstract topics. So you see,RESPECT extreme metal, you dont have to like it,but RESPECT IT for what it is.Its true music. And all songs sound the same? C'mon! Weres the logic in that? Its not even that popular,it actually pertains to underground more than mainstream music, and is respected for its intent, lyricism, effor, skills, and overall sound.Hope the cleared things up for you lol.

Death metal makes me want to hit something. It's so unintelligent-sounding. Grindcore is even more ridiculous, they make really short songs that just feature instrument-bashing. Why? I don't know...

Everyone can have their opinion, but does that mean they have to tear down everything from that opinion and say it's stupid and useless?

No. So stop being passive agressive about it and tell your mate, "Thanks, but I'm not really into that. Could you please stop playing that?"

Holy crap, it's not that hard to say something like that.

This might sound strange but I listen to more metal than anyone I know and I still agree with you. Most bands get so focused on letting out their anger they end up smothering the music.

Everyone is entitled to like what they like. sounds like your mate just wants you enjoy that which makes him happy. Bit if you tell him once you're not not interested, then he should respect that. But on the other hand, if you don't like metal, then just leave it at. No need to trash it, or loose a friendship over it. I don't like or understand it either but I know that not everyone likes or understands the music that I cherish.
