I feel discouraged when i play guitar

I have played guitar for about 5 years. I own an acoustic and electric guitar, nothing terribly fancy. I've always enjoyed learning new songs that I like, and can sometimes get fairly good at them. However, I've never really played for more than about 10 to 30 minutes per day, sometimes not at all. Until recently I've been content with just learning to play other songs but lately I've felt this overwhelming urge to create my own music. However, whenever I try to come up with even a simple progression I am paranoid that it sounds too much like another song. I feel like everything I manage to come up with is heavily derivative of whatever I've been listening to lately. As a result I feel frustrated and stifled, and whenever I pick up my guitar I feel tired and discouraged after no more than a few minutes. It has really worn me out. Is this normal?

Try learning something hard... You only get better by trying to play something that is 'currently' out of your experience depth, eventually you will start to get better at it, try playing for more than an hour a day. (fight the feeling of defeat) There are so many things you can do on a guitar just have to learn them. Try listening to guitar music that (I know this sounds weird) doesn't sound great but involves a lot of technical skill. I've been playing guitar for 17 years and I've come to realise that improvement comes in waves. Learning to play something might be impossible one day but it'll just click a day later. Learning to skip string sweep literally killed me for a good 4 months but it eventually just happened. Keep practicing and you might get addicted :)

You are focusing on what comes from music and not what it is to you, The love for guitar is to me like the love for a soulmate. You over look the flaws and work at the relationship between you two at your own pace together, learn what guitar is, understand it and ask yourself if you truly love it and music enough to want to spend your time on it. Don't worry about anybody else and how good that make it look. Just know that working at something you love will only make it stronger.

I love music and playing my guitar, I occasionally like everyone does eventually fall into a rut where it feels like you're getting nowhere but all you need to do is keep at it. If it gets too frustrating try to learn something else on or about the guitar and rest your mind so you can come back to it later. Try to set a schedule for 1 hr of practice a day if you can.

Practice Chords, Notes, Learn music theory, Strumming technique, observe your favorite guitar player on youtube watch what they do and feel the music. Its always good to start working on that ear by transcribing simple songs and only check tab sites if you're stuck

Don't take it so seriously. Just have fun with it. I understand how you feel. I used to try to make up my own songs on piano and would feel the same frustration...well that and I thought I just sucked. Don't be so hard on yourself, everyone is influenced by each other. Don't give up playing just because you think you aren't original.

For me, I can't sit down and write a song. I get inspiration at random times and go with that, but forcing it doesn't work for me. Everyone has a different process, just find what works for you. Besides, not everyone is a great composer, but you can still enjoy playing.

Its called influence...and well...you being critical is really you being an artist. Im that guy too and ive been playing melodic death metal for 20 years. Try backwards power chords...it give a somber tone... or a different standard tuning.

  • It's totally normal. Everyone gets frustrated with their hobbie/passion/whatever at some point or another. The key is to never give up and to play because you enjoy it, and it makes you feel good not beacause you want to be the best at. Those people do exsist the "competitive" people and I can be one of them (most of the time :P) but the whole point is to just be happy!

I feel like this when I draw or paint lately. I think it's a creative block. Maybe you could take a break from it so you get your passion back...or you could collaborate on a song to get more inspiration or motivation. Just remember to have fun, and don't take it too seriously.

its normal, i feel it all the time when i animate: nothing feels original. I think of it as getting older/more mature and losing my imagination.

  • Normal. Guitar is nice of course, but has become a pretty cliche instrument nowadays. You could try some alternative tunings & see if that gets you beyond the musical ruts.

LOL. Everything that you can play has already been played. All you can do is add your own swagger to it. Good Luck.
