I feel a strong connection to fictional book characters.

I am somewhat of an avid reader, and yet even small excerpts, (Even though I don't know much back-story...) I still feel extremely depressed upon discovery [that] the character has died.

It's a long story really, but the finer details don't need to be known. Also, I did in fact use 'excerpts' correctly.
