I eat a lot of filthy food, is that normal?

I've always been rather cavalier regarding cleanliness with food. I never wash my hands before eating, most of the time I don't do it before or after cooking. I get filthy at work and never wash before lunch, my hands will be black and crusty from tools, chemicals and grime, but I don't care. I never cared one bit about this. I've also never been sick from it, I'm strong as an ox and fit as a fiddle.

Lots of times my dogs will try to sneak a bite off my plate and I just pick up what they snatch and take it back and eat it. I don't even care if they've gnawed up half of a pork chop, I'll still take what's left of it back and eat it.

I drop food all the time, I look at it, brush off any hair and larger rocks, and nom nom nom. I don't mind a bit of grit. Hair is a definite no-no though.

If my cheese is a little moldy, I cut the mold part off and eat the rest. Same for vegetables and fruit. As long as it still tastes right, then mold doesn't bother me at all. If it tastes gross then I don't eat it, don't be silly.

I leave my pizza on the counter in the box overnight and eat that shit the next day, and maybe even the day after that. I don't like how the texture gets from refrigeration.

I don't think there's one single food safety rule that I follow 100% of the time. Most of the time I follow none.

I don't know if what all these other people claim thy do is actually done all the time or if it's just for show, I really don't. I know I've done some of those things just for show a couple times. What about you? How often do you follow the safety protocol? How often do you just do it for show? Does anyone have any habits in common with me?

Is this normal?

I work in a hospital so I do wash my hands regularly but I'm cool with everything else you said except maybe the half dog chewed pork. OK I would eat it but only because I love pork.

Well I drink raw eggs, but I don't think this compares to the things you do.

I mean that's a little gross, but most of that stuff won't hurt you at all. I'd watch out with the shit on your hands though, that could cause problems later down the line.

And that's the funny and gross thing about pizza, you can leave it out and it'll be just fine due to all the preservatives in it.

Eh... I'm not really grossed out. I actually chuckled a little reading this.

I don't mind the pizza thing. But I would worry that if I left it out overnight, it would attract bugs. But I think you really should wash your hands. Other than that... I found it kinda funny. To each their own.

lol I do all that too, and sometimes have a bit of mold, it's actually not bad. my immunities must be pretty strong cus I never got sick from 'dirty' food like that either. If it tastes good and doesn't make you sick then I don't see why people are so worried about it...

I am lax on SOME foods, but not all.

I don't go as far as you do. But hey, what's an immune system for right?

Follow it to the letter when I'm cooking for someone else. Considerably more lax when it's just me. The only thing I am fussy about are dairy products. I wouldn't eat yoghurt that had been left out in the sun all day.

The initial reaction to this is to tell you that you're going to catch some terrible disease and die and that you're gross for even doing this shit but actually, i think its fine. All that hand washing is just an ingrained habit. The day that it clicked with me was when i BBQ'd at the park one day. The meat was not rinsed, the only water was in the lake and i did wash my hands but in the dirtiest dirty water imaginable and all was well. So stomach issues or anything.

I think that all we do is make the germs more immune to shit in the long run. The tool grease is gross and i agree with Dappled who says he's selective when he cooks for other people. I think that you're ok but i would not be able to eat at your house. Also, dairy products are just scary so i follow shit on that. overnight pizza or chinese food is fair game minus refrigeration.

It is normal, if you just eat stuff that's eatable. But you should wash your hands more often, because there could also be substances on your hands that can make you sick. Like salmonelle, chemicals or other diseases from your dog that chewed on your food. At least I would do that to be more secure of not getting sick, but it's still your own choice if you do or don't get a little cleaner with foods.
