I don't understand why people smoke

I smoked in my early 20s for a couple of years, but quit and never smoked again. I attribute that to youthful stupidity. I really don't understand lifelong smokers who never realized how pointless this particular addiction is. Heroin, alcohol, etc. I understand... it lasts for hours. The effect of smoking lasts for seconds.

It's not pointless if you enjoy it.

Pointless if you end up with a terminal illness: you do realise that HALF of all smokers die of a smoking related disease? That's totally pointless because it's avoidable, but not pointless for the tobacco companies, some of which are now promoting and making money off vaping because they're finally admitting smoking is dangerous.

So what? It's still not pointless...people enjoy smoking. That IS the point, that's why they do it.

And get outta here with that 'nobody knew it was bad' bullshit. That's not true. The industry might not have been honest about it for a while but the medical community knew and anybody who smokes can figure it out. I read antique books and magazines, it's been widely published that smoking is not good for your health for well over a century now at least.

I said nothing about "nobody knew it was bad"! And I never enjoyed it, I just felt like shit when I didn't smoke so found it hard not to do so.

If you're so widely read check out the fact that up to the 1930's many doctors used to advice people with TB to smoke because nicotine is a cough suppressant. Doctors themselves were notorious in my living memory of having some of the highest smoking rates of any profession, and nurses were about the same.

Even when I was pregnant in the early 70's I was never advised to stop smoking: the only information I had was that smokers usually had smaller babies than non-smokers but no-one explained why that nicotine crossed the placental barrier to the baby.

You sound like an apologist for the tobacco companies: "might not have been honest about it for a while"? They denied the dangers of smoking until fairly recently and fought many court cases with their own tame expert doctors giving evidence for them.

What is "fairly recently" to you?

"On January 11, 1964, Luther L. Terry, M.D., Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service, released the first report of the Surgeon General’s Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health.

On the basis of more than 7,000 articles relating to smoking and disease already available at that time in the biomedical literature, the Advisory Committee concluded that cigarette smoking is—

A cause of lung cancer and laryngeal cancer in men
A probable cause of lung cancer in women
The most important cause of chronic bronchitis"

            "
The release of the report was the first in a series of steps, still being taken more than 40 years later, to diminish the impact of tobacco use on the health of the American people.

For several days, the report furnished newspaper headlines across the country and lead stories on television newscasts. Later it was ranked among the top news stories of 1964.

During the more than 40 years that have elapsed since that report, individual citizens, private organizations, public agencies, and elected officials have pursued the Advisory Committee’s call for “appropriate remedial action.”

Early on, the U.S. Congress adopted the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act of 1965 and the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act of 1969. These laws—

Required a health warning on cigarette packages
Banned cigarette advertising in the broadcasting media
Called for an annual report on the health consequences of smoking"

My mom had me in 1978 and she was advised to quit smoking. And she did. I don't believe it's that big of a deal to smoke while pregnant though. I don't think it has been proven well enough to have any serious effects.

I think adults should be able to buy, sell and use tobacco. Period.

That's the Surgeon General's warning, not the tobacco companies ADMITTING they'd known for decades that smoking is dangerous to health.

What you "believe" about smoking during pregnancy isn't science, that's just your belief: my daughter was born so underweight (average length) she almost died and there was nothing to account for it except my smoking. Even then, my (smoking) obstretician didn't put it down to that, it was suggested to me later and I then researched the issue.

I tried alcohol and found it too gross, never tried a cigg though, I mean even one shot of vape made me choke. It is truly pointless. People do that for ''social status'' or something. But cigarette is addictive and there's no other excuse cause that shit must be nasty.

Most smoke to medicate the mind. We are treating a mental disorder. i smoked tobacco 20 years off and on about a year at a time until it ruined my health , then i used use chewing tobacco for another ten years . and nothing for about ten years . its just a drug in smokable form. If it means you are weak then the entire species is weak because most humans use a drug. the old saying id smoke in my sleep if someone would hold the cigarette is true

Okay I'll bite. Most alcohol consumers aren't addicts. Let's throw that one out of the way and attempt to have an intelligent conversation. Heroine and other opiod addicts are of such a depednece that it upsets life. And not just because of legality, it changenge actual functions. Tobacco use, even though it kills, doesn't really upset day to day situations beyond the prejudice against it.

That may be true short term, but long term FIFTY PERCENT of smokers will die of a smoking related disease and it does upset day to day situations because of the money spent on it and the fact that many smokers inflict their smoke on others, including on children.

Peer pressure, the idea that it's somehow "cool", self-hate, depression, coersion. All valid psychological reasons for starting. I have sympathy for those people who start because they were coerced into it.

Still doesn't take away the fact that it's dumb as hell, but once the people who started realised this, they're already addicted to drowning themselves in tar, nicotine and formaldehyde.

You could use this way of thinking to justify just about anything. That is a weird and malleable worldview that seems to favor keeping people down as opposed to lifting them up and acknowledging a person's agency.

You wonder what it's like? You see people doing it and wonder what the hype or drive is so you try it.

Cigarettes give you a needed boost in energy, but they don't really make you feel good like opiates or drinking.

When I was in my 20s, I got into drinking for several years before stopping and then getting into the opiates instead. When I drank when going out, I had to smoke also because alcohol alone would get me feeling lethargic, I mean it made me feel better, but also a little sleepy unless I had a smoke with it. The two combined gave me the perfect feeling, the buzz from the alcohol with the touch of energy from the smokes.
