I don't understand why hard work doesn't pay off

I am the hardest worker i know. Teachers come up to me daily praising my good 'work ethic'. And when i say daily, im not exaggerating. It’s the same with sport. I know for a fact that i train harder then everyone in my squad. The coaches know it, the parents know it. I hold the same averages as those who win gold medals at nationals, but i fail to even make the meet. I train (before year 12) 10 times a week. My pb’s were:
50 Free: 29.0
100 Free: 1.02
200 Free: 2.16
I am in year 12 right now, and i am having a hard time trying to stay confident when all the people around me are getting higher marks than me doing hardly any work at all. My averages for this semester were:
English – C
History – A-
Geography – C+
Maths – C+
Art – B
Is there any light for me in the future? I want to be successful, i don’t know what in yet, but i want to get there, and i know i will if i find my talent. I am just afraid that i will never find it. I want to leave a mark in the world before i leave.
What do you guys think? Will hard work ever pay off?

I used to get good grades in high school with no efforts. When I went to University, I blew it because I didn't put in the effort.

There where plenty of people around me who had to work incredibly hard to get similar grades than me, not working hardly at all, and guess what; these people have good jobs now, they have made something of themselves.

I know so many people who had to work hard and they mostly all have made it to the middle class. Middle class is good enough if you ask me.

your hard work does not equal intelligence. Some people are more intelligent and pick things up quicker. Some teachers are better and can teach any child to pass. Some students are kind of slow(not retarded or stupid) just kind of slow and it takes them a bit longer to grasp things. Have you ever considered a tutor? It might help you. You might just need a little extra help.

You have to look at this long term. And also, if you didn't work so hard, you might be failing in school.

Nobody cares if you got an A in English Lit in college. All that matters is if you graduated with a degree. Why? Because getting a degree meant that you put in the time, work, and effort for 4+ years. I've known a couple of people--bright kids--who were lazy and dropped out of college.

I also knew a couple of guys--very average students in high school--who put in the effort in college and studied hard. They weren't A students, but they got their degrees. One became a lawyer, the other became an engineer.

Just remember, who won the race? The rabbit or the turtle?

Your hard work will pay off. Just keep doing what you're doing and say confident! :) you'll see how eventually your hard work pays off. Good luck!:)

Just because you are putting in a lot of effort does not mean that you are doing the correct work. Ask your teachers and coaches, if I am working so hard why am I not getting further along or better. They probably can help you. But a closed mouth never gets ed. I can go swimming in a pool everyday for two hours for a year and I still wouldn't be able to swim the English Channel. Because swimming in a pool is nothing like swimming in the English Channel or even the ocean. Likewise just because you study a lot, does not mean you are studying properly. You can flap your arms all day long and you won't fly an inch.

My friend, those who work hard will always have a bright future. What you need is good guidance. A good coach for your swimming to help you improve even faster and good teachers to help you improve in your grades.

    Work hard always pays off...

I think that grades are mostly important just for getting into good schools and getting good jobs. I mean, no one can evaluate your performance better than yourself. Also, I think that its much more important for you to learn in your classes than get good grades. And, I think that if you set goals that you want to achieve and you work hard, then either you will achieve them or you will get close enough to the point where you are satisfied.

Both but I mostly remember the ones in University. I would hardly go to class and just borrow notes and stuff and would get the same grade as them for the larger part of the semester. They all have good jobs now and I don't.

Mind you, I have mental issues but it doesn't change the fact that these people had a really hard time in school but perseverance prevailed.
