I don't understand dating

I get on a theoretical level how people start dating. Person #1 meets Person #2 and talk, and eventually they're making out everywhere...or something like that. I know a bunch of people dating too, so kudos to them. I can't place those ideas on myself though. I've had those I admired from a distance. But, I have no true desire to get "closer" to them outside of friendship. Because what really is a gf/bf but a friend, with really specific societal expectations and maybe sex. I don't think I've ever really had a crush before either. I feel like I should care more about dating and all that jazz, but I honestly don't. IIN?
