I don't 'see' people. iin?

If I'm out in a crowd, a store, walking down the street, I don't actually 'see' any of the people. I just see a forest (of people), not individual trees. I never notice people I know even, they notice me and have to yell my name 10 times to get my attention.

Even when I'm talking to one or 2 people, I don't notice things about their appearance such as lazy eyes, moles, and things like that. I know this because my friends are always saying 'holy shit, did you see that lady's goiter' after we walk away from whoever we were talking to or pass by, and my answer is always 'no'.

I could have just walked away from someone and if you asked me what they were wearing, or anything else about their appearance, I probably wouldn't be able to give you any correct answers.

I don't know if I'm purposely ignoring everyone because I really don't care about people at all, or if this is just a normal thing.

Is anyone else like this?

  • I hope you live in a safe small city because your situation awareness is underdeveloped and that could bite you in the butt one day. A serial killer might have your ass cheek for lunch one day.

    • Good post, I've thought about this before. Not exactly about getting eaten by a serial killer, but when they show wanted people on the news I think, I could never find these people even if I walked right past them.

I'm not worried about being able to defend myself, plus the likelihood that I'd get suckered into any iffy situation is slim to none. I'm really observant when it comes to listening to what people say and determining what they're all about.

      • Well, that's good.

I do the same thing as you in shopping stores. I would find it exhausting to look at each person individually. The "forest of people" is an excellent description of how it feels.

A long time ago when I lived in a mega city, I told my employer that I went to a Wal-Mart in my neighborhood to buy some last minute Christmas gifts. She laughed and told me to look at the other customers the next time I went, she told me that I would stand out. I had no clue what she was talking about because I don't pay attention to the other customers that way, but I did what she said the next time I went. The store was packed with customers and I was the only white person (and I'm a pale one at that). I went back to work and told her about it, she laughed hysterically. She found my naivety very amusing. Since then, I've tried to be more aware, but now I've moved to a small (safe) city, so I don't care as much anymore.

I only notice those who are either very attractive or stand out in some way; if someone is statistically average, I can't tell you a thing about them, not their eye color for sure.

I am completely opposite. I fine myself watching people more than paying attention to the things I am out to get done. I absolutely love to "people watch". No idea why, I think I just enjoy the diversity in the kinds of people you will see.

Especially at the Missouri State Fair, you cannot imagine the strange shit you can see there unless you have been.

Well, I know when I'm at work and a customer asks me for help and I leave for a minute and come back I've forgotten who I've talked to. I have to make a conscious effort to remember who they are before I leave. Other than that I notice when people call my name and stuff.

Sounds like you're in your own little world. XD
