I don't put much value in uniqueness

There are many people who are trying all they can just so they can stand out as a unique individual different from the rest. I personally do not care. To me, I see uniqueness as having instrumental value, in other words I see it as not being a good thing in itself but rather good if it can be used to bring good thing to the world.

In fact, I actually prefer conformism for the most part. I'd rather have a society of functional clones than a society of dysfunctional unique snowflakes. Of course, I do agree that people should speak out if they feel there is a problem - it's better than slowly pickling in your problems. But other than that, while uniqueness often gives the world a nice charm, I don't put much value in it unless it brings positive effects.

Is this normal?

    I like to see people being who they are regardless of what other people think of them. If you're trying to be unique then you're not unique and, in a way, that's conforming, trying to follow a certain type or group that isn't yourself just because you're concerned of what others might think. It takes a lot of courage for one to just be who they are. You don't see too much of it from people. Because of that that, in itself, is uniqueness.

    I think unique people don't know they are unique, only others see it.
    The ones who try to stand out and be unique aren't.

    I'd rather have a society of "unique special snowflakes". Conformity will never bring any change, and life is all about progress imo. Of course that's not to say that conformity is a bad thing. People who try to be unique without a cause are annoying. I don't see anything wrong with not wanting to adhere to that.

      That's why I said that I see instrumental value in it. As you said, uniqueness often drives progress. The point I was trying to raise is that how people want to be unique no matter the consequences, whether devolving or progressive. For me, if someone's uniqueness does bring forth change for the better, then it is valuable to me. I was simply saying that I don't really value uniqueness in itself (i.e. minus instrumental value).

        Personally I don't mind if uniqueness provides value, as long as the uniqueness is authentic. Nothing is more annoying than the modern day middle class American hipster who listens to obscure music and unpopular clothing not because they enjoy it, but to feel superior to society's "clones" or "sheep". Trying too hard is never a good thing. Fitting in just to look cool or be accepted when it goes against your genuine desires or values is just as bad as being unique to be a special snowflake. Then again I highly value authenticness. I don't know about you.

        You might not realize it but we need all kinds of people to run the world. Everyone has different talents and they should not bad for having that talent. Not everyone is going to be great at everything.

        Thats what we are trying to do, protect the society from Innovators, Ritualists, Retritists and most of all Rebels and keep Conformity alive. But thats not happening. Social norms and values are changing. Did you know sex outside of marriage was once a deviant violation of law? Look at what happened today. No matter how hard we try society will change, its been changing sine Day 1 and there is nothing we can do. Conformity is meant to be replaced...

    It seems very average to attempt difference. It is wonderful when people accept themselves for who they are and do not feel the need to stand out :)
    In one perspective we're all the same and in another we're all completely unique.
    It can be irritating when people are uncomfortable enough that they feel they need to stand out when they are unique in themselves already. I think the differences in each individual is great and it helps us learn from each other, but only when the difference in genuine (not arrogance and deceit)

    I understand where youre coming from, and I feel the same way where theres always someone trying too hard to be original and different just to be different. And I agree that if everyone were unique the world would never agree on anything and eventually start a huge dysfunctional world war. But I also disagree, because uniqueness can be nice to a point. Like I dont like if you wear a giant cape on rollerblades shouting how you love the color blue, but I like when someone has the confidence to wear old jeans or dye their hair red.

    Everyone is unique.
    I tryou mean this from the bottom of my heart. Whether that uniqueness makes a social change, whether it be a positive or negative impact is a different issue.
