I don't like to call him my "boyfriend".....

My best friend and I have developed a deeper relationship over the past six months. And, yes, we do consider it a relationship. But one thing we don't do is refer to each other as "boyfriend" or "girlfriend". It just sounds so childish; like something that maybe would have been okay in high school, but now that we're in our 20's, it just seems silly.
We have nicknames or pet names for each other, and we use those in public, but we really act more like best friends in public than a couple. So when people ask if he is my boyfriend, my best response is "Ehh....kinda. He's my best friend."
Is this normal?

My ex was 10 years older than me and when anyone would call him my boyfriend he'd laugh and say no, I'm her man friend. lol

I can see what you mean, but it seems more cliche to purposely avoid the term "boyfriend" than it would to just admit that that's actually what is - your boyfriend. I'm 26 and I have a boyfriend....it doesn't sound at all childish to me.

Are you a couple of queers or male and female?

"seeing each other" , "courting" , "dating" , there's loads of other words/phrases you could use if you feel uncomfortable using the term boyfriend.
Or just say "yes, he's my boyfriend." then make a comment about how high-school it sounds, and laugh at it.

  • I'm actually in a relationship just like that. We don't feel like we need to define it, but when it comes down to someone else asking one of us out, we tell them were taken. Boyfriend/girlfriend does sound very HS.

My boyfriend refers to me as "the wife". But I felt the same at first. But what other term could you use? If you don't use it, then people will assume that you or your boyfriend are available...it's a term used to say "I'm taken."

    There are other words:
Beau, Companion, Partner, Significant Other, soul mate, "main squeeze" ect. Use a Thesaurus.

I think it's okay if you don't want to openly advertise it, but if someone asks you, you should tell them what is. He's your boyfriend and that's that. You shouldn't be ashamed of it.

  • How about "partner?"

Yeah I was 26 and my man was still my boyfriend. Then became fiance and husband - all before I turned 27 :) But to get back on track, I don't think it's childish at all to use the term boyfriend! I will admit it's kinda weird to hear 60-year-olds talk about their "boyfriend..."
