I don't identify with the industry i work in,i identify with my skills

I'm a programmer and I've worked in a variety of industries (i.e. Tech, Finance, even Government.) I don't really care what industry I work in, as long as they need my skills.

Other people seem to make a big deal about the industry they work in, more so than the actual skills they bring. They seem to think that moving to different industries is a huge deal. Also, they tend to have pre-perceptions of people based on what industry they work in.

Me, I just see the industry as a means to get what I want (money) by doing what I enjoy (programming).. I don't really like or dislike any industry as long as they have a need for my skills and are willing to pay a fair price for it.

I seem to get the vibe that you are like most of us normal people out here, if you want loyalty get yourself a dog! I despise working for anybody but it serves as a means to an end...I need money, you need my skills, lets negotiate and get on with it.

If I no longer feel comfortable working for you because of your work ethics, fuck you, bye bye, time to move on!

As some who has many friends in various sects of programming, mainly game design and development, and as someone who was once interested in that as well, I think i feel where you are coming from. Most of their skills can be applied to various industries and sections of a given industry. However there seems to be a lot of pride and prejudice between people of different occupations who essentially have the same job. I think everyone tends to attach an emotional dimension onto their job to justify what they are doing for what they are making.

What's worse now days I think is the degradation of a work place based on those emotional and opinionated attachments. For example, most people would rather be unemployed than work at a McDonalds. A place that pays more, has better hours, and better benefits than any job I personally have ever had. Im only 20 years old. But I refused to apply there like so many others because of the social stigma that is put on people who work there. McDonalds, like any other industry, is one run by customer service and management. Something that anybody who is smart and can work hard, can climb up in and make great money. But people, for their images sake, would rather make that climb at Target or JCPenny's and make less money in the process.

I like the way you think. You'll never get a big head over your profession if you keep thinking like this.

You aren't picky about your employer. Seems normal.
