I don't feel emotional about dogs in movies/shows. iin?

We all know how people will turn super happy when they see dogs being happy in movies and then their eyes into a faucet when they see movies such as Marley & Me.

I do not want to sound heartless or evil (and I know this will turn many dog lovers vicious), but I don't feel that emotional when a dog dies in a movie. For example, when I saw Marley & Me, I was a bit sad but I didn't cry a single tear, and I know many people will start branding me as evil for that. The furthest a scene about a dog has emotionally pushed me was in Elfen Lied (SPOILER: Bullies killed the dog of a mutated girl just to torment her, and the bullies become her first murder victims), when I felt much more sympathy for the dogs than the bullies and felt that the bullies deserved it, but I didn't cry over it either (while everyone else was going hysterical).

Basically, I don't feel THAT upset about the death of dogs in movies (unless they are very central to the plot). I'm not against dogs or anything (I like them), and can understand why people would feel so upset (after all, in American culture, dogs are man's best friend). But I'm not emotional about their deaths in movies, at least no more than when another human dies in the movie.

Is this normal?

People are able to empathise with dogs because they have a lot of "human" characteristics, so when they die we don't feel that differently to if a human died. In fact there are loads of reasons why we often feel worse. We breed and train dogs to be perfectly loyal, and if something is perfectly loyal it's more like an extension of ourselves. But we also tend to think of dogs as completely innocent and defenseless because they're so deferential. We also breed dogs to look cute; we give them the exaggerated characteristics of human children.

I don't know where I'm going with this, but there are lots of reasons why some people might feel particular pain when a dog dies. There are more too than what I wrote, but you get the message :P

EDIT: It's totally normal not to feel that way though :P

I don't really like dogs that much but i was struggling to hold back the tears during Hachiko. Never saw marley and me though. I think it's normal, sometimes it depends what kind of mood you're in. and like you said, it really depends how important they are to the plot

I guess I would say it's normal for you. I'm the opposite of course and not just dogs but animals in general. I don't think there's anything wrong with your feelings as long as you don't judge the feelings of others harshly and or seek to make a mockery of them as some might do. Your feelings are valid for you and you have a right to them. This might seem like a trivial analogy to some but I enjoy football and baseball and can't understand the attraction whole continents have for soccer and much less cricket. It's not wrong or right, it's just how I feel.
