I don't care that i got the highest grade possible...

I'm doing a college course (not university) and I've just finished my first year, with another year to go. Without being big headed, I'm one of the top in my class and I got the highest grade you can get. Sort of like an A*.

The thing is, I'm not even bothered that I got the highest grade you can get... I've got the skills to do well in the course, but I don't feel I have the passion and drive to do well in the industry.

I feel bad because although I put a lot of effort in, I don't feel it was that hard to get this grade. A lot of people on my course don't seem to try as hard as they could to be fair, but they are more passionate about the subject.

Is it normal to not care that I did the best you can do?

But... I... organised this whole party for you? I got your favourite celebrity (Pat Butcher) to sing a song about it. And I've made one of those special cakes you like so much (wink). Now I just feel like... why did I make so much effort? Everything is ruined.

No, Pat, no need to trim up your growler. We're not wanted here. Put it away, Pat.

    PAT!

A sense of accomplishment tends to be linked both with effort and achievement. If you feel that the effort you put in wasn't that much, then lacking a feeling of accomplishment makes sense.

    You should stay in school.

I've been wanting to write a story on here for some time that goes something like, "IIN that I don't think I'm smart, it's just that everyone else around me is stupid." I mean, yeah, I'm happy to get good grades and not actually fail, and I'm too lazy to actually want to be challenged, but then again... Yeah, I'm not sure how to explain it, but I think I know how you feel. Normal.

Since the modern American school system has adopted the "no child left behind" philosophy, the system is designed for the least intelligent students to pass.
No one with a moderate intelligence has to strive very hard to get by and the smarter ones can breeze through the present school system without too much effort.
Perhaps you have realized this unconsciously and feel that you did not earn your grade because you did not have to work very hard to achieve it.
Those of us who were smart enough to see through the rhetoric of Geo Bush understand that his policies were nothing less than a "dumbing down of America". How unfortunate for your generation.

    • Thanks for your comment. I thought I just say I'm actually English, but there's a similar situation with our education system. I'm also not in school, I'm on a diploma course (the equivalent of 3 A-levels).
