I don't bother trying unless i can be the best

For most things in life, I just have no motivation to try. Things that once interested me are now just memories, because I know I cannot be the best at them. There will always be someone who can do it better or faster. If I can't be the best, then what is the point? No one remembers that guy who came in 2nd place at something.

I don't like that way of thinking. Not everyone is a winner, you whiner.

"I don't bother trying unless I can be the best"

You can never be the best. Like you said, someone will always be better. But that shouldn't stop you from living. You asked what the point was - the point is to be a funtioning human in society. You need to understand that there is lots of middle ground between being nothing, and being the best.

Thanks, I think you have the best comment here. I try to stay positive but it is hard sometimes. I know there is a middle ground between nothing and the best, but it is a matter of me being content with being somewhere in the middle, which I still need to work on, but it is reassuring to hear it from someone else.

You're welcome. And I know it's hard, but we all have to go through it. Life isn't so much of a competition as it is a progression. :)

That is a good excuse for accepting that you are a loser. You won't be best in life either. So now what are you going to do?

Maybe you shouldn't go for "being the best" but for "being really good in doing it YOUR way". That's also a unique position. I mean; there are a LOT of painters, but the real good ones are the ones with the recognizable style. There isn't one best painter, but there are more very good painters and they all have their own fans. Fan of painter A may hate the work of painter B, so A doesn't have to feel threatened by B; it's getting the attention he wants to get.

I would bet you anything you wish that everyone respects those that try, a whole hell of a lot more than those who don't.
Some of us don't need to be the fastest, best, most wonderful or photogenic to enjoy an activity. We do things because we get pleasure from doing.

Why not just do something because you enjoy it?

Besides there's plenty of things in life where there is no best, take art for example.

Deep down you know you weren't built for fighting, but that doesn't mean your not prepared to try.

Maybe they won't remember the guy who came in second, but they will remember the guy that could have played, but didn't because he was scared too.

No I am pretty sure the person who never bothered to try in the first place is actually far more forgettable than the person who finished second.

But using your logic, he has a better chance of being remembered for not trying, so if people remembering him is the goal then it seems he is right not to try.
