I don't believe ops should be allowed to delete comments. iin?

Nothing on is it normal irritates me more than someone deciding to delete a comment you've made. Especially, when you have placed effort in trying to sympathize and give real advice. If the OP does not like what we have to say, too bad. It may be useful to another user.

is it normal to believe this power should be reduced? Perhaps they should only be able to report a comment to management. At which point management will judge if the comment is trollery. If it is not, it should not be deleted. We are all adults here and we should all be able to endure criticism. The webite is called "Is it Normal?" It should be clear from the start that someone responding "no" is intrinsic to the binary nature of the question. By offering the option of deleting comments the essence of the website loses its purpose. It will no longer be a place where curious people come to question their beliefs, observations, and habits. Instead it will become a place to arbitrarily confirm them. If you came here just to have your beliefs confirmed, this should not be the correct site for you. But for the time being, it is.

If you have deleted the sincere comments of others, could you please do me the courtesy of explaining why? I am perplexed.

I am in agreement here. The ability to delete a post just because the OP doesn't like it, reduces my desire to invest the time and thought necessary for an intelligent, thoughtful response.
If someone does not wish to read opposing views to or criticisms of their posts, then perhaps there is a place on the web where they can make their statements without comments from others.

It's annoying when you make time and effort to write a response and then the story gets deleted. It has happened alot lately.

  • I agree. The only reason I see to delete comments is when they are spamming the same off topic things to a point the actual discussion gets lost.

You mean like the "Stop breeding and destroy humanity" posts?

That's what I mean, I think some people delete comments because they find them offensive or politically incorrect. I think they should just leave all the comments, some of the 'worst' ones are the best.

I see. In that case, yes, I agree.

I think I have to agree with you. I have never deleted a comment nor have I ever reported a comment without a good reason.

A lot of people DO come here to be reassured when they need actual advice. Seeing OPs delete a comment because it was offensive to them yet it actually contained the kind of advice that most users on here would complain about not getting is absolutely absurd. It discourages users from putting the time into giving good advice, as said above, and it adds yet another curveball to the already disorganized game that is being played here on this site.

I can't stand it but don't mind it at the same time, it irritates the fuck out of me but it also means that op hasn't got a mature and constructive point left

I added a bit more to the second paragraph as to why it does bother me so. I believe, in the end, it wears away at the integrity of IIN.

I didn't know that was allowed. I mean this site isn't exactly meant to be politically correct...

How does political correctness apply to anything?

The option to delete comments nullifies the purpose of this website. Which is to discern the normalcy of a belief, habit, or observation. If OPs are allowed to delete the comments that contradict their own predetermined answer, they are no longer making a sincere query. They have just come here to strengthen their preexisting ideas. Also, when they take such action they also waste the time and effort of our most sincere users and they deprive other users from appreciating those comments.

I agree with you. Especially the part about a comment maybe being helpful to another reader. It doesn't happen as much now, but I remember a time when the comments held some real gems...but for me personally. No two people will react the same way and it's the uniqueness of opinions that made this site what it was.
