I cant watch films or tv at all.

I do not have the patience to sit or watch films of any kind. I like doing other stuff, but over the past two years Ive gotten to a point where I cant watch anything without getting really really really bored. Comedy especially makes me yawn. Is this short attention span normal?

I think it could be ADD (attention deposite disorder) or just pure disinterest. When you sit down are you doing it from boredom or will to watch something. If it is boredom that it is disinterest, if you find yourself actually wanting to watch tv and movies then you should get checked for add

It might just be that you have developed higher expectations for what you find entertaining. I think most people do at some point after you have seen so much stuff it all seems to repeat.

    Hiya,

It means what you're watching doesn't appeal. If it did , you'd be riveted.

People ask me if I watch certain programmes/films, then ask me 5 mins later, looking shocked when I repeat that I haven't.

They can't believe that anyone doesn't watch the same as them, and it sounds like all they do is watch TV, which is fine if that's what you want to do, but there's not enough on for that to be worth my while – it sounds as if you're similar. I watched something they did once or twice but couldn't be bothered keeping up.

If you find something you like, or you've got a favourite actor/actress, stick to their stuff until you've seen it all (or you're bored) Get what you want to see from somewhere specialist if you have to.
Get a coloured highlighter and put rings round what you want to see.

    How is TV getting worse?

I actually think we are in the golden age of TV drama. Have you ever watched any shows on HBO or AMC? The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad or Carnivàle? These all happened in the last ten years.

Don't get me wrong, I think there is a lot of rubbish on the box too but if you stop channel surfing mindlessly and read a site like metacritic you can find some good stuff. I usually make note of the shows I want to watch beforehand and then find myself looking forward to it. I also watch far less TV that way and make better use of my time.

I cant take acting seriously anymore on most new shows.

If you experience extreme difficulty sitting still for more than thirty minutes you might want to speak to someone about ADD.. If you're constantly faced with urgent need to be doing something ANYTHING other than something that requires your devoted concentration it may be a symptom of ADHD or even Mania.

As a psych major I'm torn between calling you normal and abnormal.

You are blessed with short attention span for movies. Go out and be part of the world, most people can't

Hmmm, you should try watching a few REALLY funny films, depending on your attitude towards life, those could be different to mine, but i am looking forward to Brúno :) If you can't sit through that... ADD? (generally, tv sucks anyway, do something more useful.)

Don't worry about it - there are plenty of other things to do - I went for a couple of years not being able to stand tv and movies, I think I was put off by my dad and my sister wasting so much time watching rubbish and they were also putting on a lot of weight. Now I don't mind kicking back and watching the occasional DVD.

  • If its short attention it would apply to more than TV & movies.

I think it's normal. I usually get up to get a glass of water and then never come back. Especially after studying film and television it becomes really hard to get involved in movies and tv shows.

Just curious, do you have the same trouble reading a book or a magazine?

maybe try reading a book, TV is so stupid these days, it's no wonder you get bored.
