I can't swallow my food!

This has been going on for 15 years. If i'm not comfortable in a social situation, I can't swallow my food. My throat will get very tight and doesn't do the proper reflex in order to swallow down the food. Then I get scared of choking and find a reason to stop eating. I avoid family dinners, going to crowded restaurants and eating with people around.

I can't eat at work because I don't feel comfortable, I tend to starve myself until I get home. I guess this is a form of social anxiety. I just wonder if this is common, or If I'm the only one with that issue...

this happens to me every now and then, but it's different from your situation. Sometimes ill have a nervous thought that pops into my head or I feel sick and am worried im going to throw up my food, and when I panic suddenly it makes it hard to swallow my food. However, with a deep breath and a drink of water my muscles relax and I'm fine again. I think your level of anxiety is more severe, but I don't think it's entirely abnormal. JUst try thinking of ways to calm yourself when you are eating. If you worry about choking, your anxiety will not help the problem

I understand. Please go speak to a doctor so you don't have to go through it and in the mean time relax, breathe, take it slow. This is your world too.

I hate eating with other people too! 50% due to social anxiety, and 50% due to the fact that other people eat so damn slow! I can swallow ok, but my biggest fear is I'll get it all over my fingers, leave crumbs, get it on my face, and just generally be a messy eater with people watching me. Also, I finish like way before everyone else and I'm just sat there wondering how everyone else made theirs last so long! which is wierd cuz as a kid I'd be the last one left in the dining room, slowly nibbling away. And now, if I finish, I'll have to get some more or it will be awkward to just sit there, but if I do that it looks greedy. Recently I was forced to eat with a couple of friends, so I deliberately ate slowly, timed that to perfection, finnished simultaneously with one girl, and the other decided to abandon hers, internally I breathed a huge sigh of relief and downed my coffee pretty much in one, big mistake. I had to sit there awkwardly without food or drink for 30 minutes before they decided it was cold enough to drink theirs, and only because I finally suggested walking back in the cold would cool them faster, 5 minutes later we got to where we were supposed to be and then they decided the coffee was now too cold to drink! In that instance, i think i was the normal one. On my first day of college, I went into the cafeteria to eat with some people, I was done before they'd swallowed their first mouthfuls, so after sitting there awkwardly, I realised that was the last time I was going to eat there. Now I just head off to a nearby coffee shop, and demolish my food as fast and as messily as I like, no questions asked, other than of course "the usual is it, chick?"

I 100%% UNDERSTAND YOU. Ive always thought I was weird. *cries aloud* I can't eat whenever I go out with my friends or whenever I have to eat with my co-workers. For some reason, I don't feel hungry at all and even if I were, I'd rather starve myself.

So, sometimes, my friends and co-workers will bug me to eat something and I'll just end up drinking soup or some substantial drink...or eat something light like a sandwich or something.

There are some great anti-depressants out there that can help with adult social anxiety too. If it's a serious enough issue to jeopardize your health you might want to see if one of those could work for you.

sounds like added stress and anxiety in socil situations you need to find a way to relax yourself while eating if you can maybe see a therapist to help you get over what brought up your anxiety in the first place, the source of the problem can also be the end of if
