I can't debate without getting emotional

Basically, I can't debate without getting emotional, and I really, really hate it. It makes me feel like some jerk who can't control their emotions, especially when I get so angry I can't properly explain my side of the argument. The other person usually doesn't get emotional, and is calm, and has a smug look on their face because they got me so fired up, so it makes me feel like a complete fool who can't control their emotions. I find it kind of ironic, considering that I've always respected people who would talk politics with someone without getting emotional...

So, is it normal that I can't debate without getting emotional? What do I do to stop getting so emotional, and respond with a clear head?

I usually only get angry in "real life" arguments, particularly with my sister. The best solution I've found is to just leave and calm down or to have a fight with her. Although,I wouldn't really recommend the last one:P

Just accept that you can't change some people's opinions and if you do get angry just take a deep breath or something. For me, it kinda just went away.

      • I dissagree. I am not emotional about topics, although I do take some more seriously than others. I won't get upset or angry about a subject, although I will find some of them irritating.

I have seen you get worked up a time or too though, lolz.

          • A lot of people think I get worked up, and I don't blame them. A lot of the time the way I type seems aggresive but not intended to be.

I'm not being a hater here, just saying that some of it does seem aggressive.

Some of the things you say are aggressive, no matter how you look at it.

Try your best to not debate, unless you want to lash out and go crazy. You need to have a little more self-control, though. Controlling your emotions is not impossible.

    • Then how is it that some people can control their emotions while others can't?

Is not that they can't, is that they don't know how to.
