I blink every time the car i'm in passes a tree

It's hard to explain. But when for example there's a row of trees by the road, I have to blink when each one passes the dashboard of the car. I only do this when I'm in the front seat. Not driving, or in the backseat. It's not just trees either, it's the white lines on the road and lampposts sometimes too. If I'm listening to the music in the car, it bothers me when the rate of the objects that passes isn't on the same beat as the music (so I don't end up blinking to the beat either.)

I've tried stopping it, but soon I just forget about it and start doing it again, without even noticing.

Do I have OCD???

It seems more like a habit than a compulsion.

The dividing line appears to be the reason you do it. If you don't have a well defined reason for doing something repetetive like that (if the reason is, "I've always done it" or "I just do it" or something like that), then you probably have a habit and not a compulsion.

If you have a reason like, "I'm afraid I'll drive off the road if I don't" or "I'm afraid someone I love will die if I don't", then I'd be leaning more towards OCD.

But if you're not doing it to ward off the anxiety of some irrational fear, then it's just a habit. If I were you, I'd probably start taking steps to break away from it, because when you're driving, you really do need to be concentrating on watching the road and not when you "should" blink.

so you get bored in the car and play games with your surroundings, big deal, i used to make my eyes go on roof tops from house to house like free running, but no big deal, you just get bored

Not OCD, this isn't a disorder, it's just a compulsion. I do something similar, but I don't blink. I just move my hands in some way...tap my fingers, or flex a muscle. I also used to count syllables on my fingers when people are speaking, or when a song is playing or stuck in my head. Every once in a while I still do it, but nowhere near as much as I used to. Weird habits, nothing to worry about. It'll go away over time.

Wow! I used to do stuff like that when I was a kid. I pretended that every time I saw a lamppost or a telephone wire post that someone extremely tall and with really long legs would step over one and I had to click my teeth or blink every time so he/she could walk. That was like eight years ago and today still while I'm driving I click my teeth whenever I see a driveway and pretend that I'm drawing a line connecting them from across the street. I'm SO glad someone else does this haha

i do things like this and have been for as long as i can remember. i blink, bite the inside of my cheek, clench my teeth, tap my foot, or do combinations of some of these when things pass. i think it's normal. we are sophisticated beings (in most cases. lol) and we search for patterns and order in things. it's just a manifestation of that instinct. it can be annoying, though.

I do this but I make a game out of it and blink every time a little sign passes me. Seems pretty normal. Your body could be doing it to keep you from becoming drowsy.

It's normal, but you do have a classic case of OCD. Many people have this problem, just make sure to monitor the levels of it and seek help if it starts controlling your life.

Yes, you have OCD. No big deal, so you blink when you drive by trees and such. Who cares?

    • I live in the Willamette Valley. This area is considered the most "tree" filled area in the world and if you are drivng to the beach from Salem (Fifty miles) I hope you can drive with your eyes shut as there is nothing BUT trees the whole way there. Quite a beautiful drive if you ask me.

My dad lives in Kennewick, Washington and how he can live without any trees around kind of makes me wonder. Everything out there is brown instead of green and it is quite ugly.

it's not Obsessive Compulsive Disorder it is Just a compulsion. It may go away in time. I actually had almost the exact same compulsion, but no longer do. It didn't really annoy me when the beat i heard wasn't in sync with passing objects but i noticed I adjust my speed to make it happen. And any equally spaced objects I would do something but can't remember what it was. I think it may just be a hyper awareness of rythyms and geometry I had. If you do not want to do it and it bothers you that you can't stop it is a compulsion. You are compelled to do it. The obsessive compulsion is one that you constantly think about even when your not in a situation that you could or normally do it. Like being at work and thinking all day about your stove being on and when your home you continually check it. even on vacation in another country with someone else at your house you can't help but think about it constantly. Everything else just feels like a distraction from your compulsion. If you did this same behavior while walking or showering or eating that's when it starts to get obsessive. If your really worried about it talk to a mental health professional about it.

I used to do it with driveways too wanted one driveway to the left and one to the right before passing another one on the left. And it really annoyed me if they weren't spaced like that. If a side street made the pattern i would count it, if it didn't i would tell myself it didn't count. Wow your post just made me think about something I totally forgot about for like 6 years. Wonder if I'll start doing it again now that I remember?
