I am obsessed with german things. is that normal?

During highschool and middleschool I used to watch A LOT of History Channel, preferably about World War II.

I would always envision myself on the Allied side.

Now I like the Germans. This happened towards the end of highschool where I came across some German military march songs on youtube. The first one I listened to I immediately became hooked (called: "Wir lagen vor Madagaskar" in case anyone is interested), ever since I've been downloading more German military songs, reading up on German table mannerism, looking at WWII videos on the Germans - I am even taking a German language class!! (I might even go to Germany to get a German girlfriend)

This sounds so crazy, I know. But is there anyone else out there that likes Germans as much as I do?

(I know A LOT of people nowadays like the Japanese, because of their media and technology - it's funny because the Japanese and Germans were the bad guys back in 1945.)

I can understand being really interested in Germany and loving the culture and language...

      But the food?

German food is, generally, not good.

To be honest, there is nothing wrong in theory in being fascinated by another culture or coutry. Obviously the German military past is quite a dark one so you need to be careful that you don't start adopting the fascist ideology of Nazi Germany whilst immersing yourself in this culture. That's all I'd say.

I did personally live in Germany for 6 months and I don't think theyr're that fascinating!!!

Don't you worry, man--I've been obsessed with German-everything for about five years now. It began with listening to German music, then self-teaching the language as best I can, and interacting with America-dwelling naive Germans as often as possible.

It's hard to find others who have similar fascination with the culture. Most I've encountered have been like, "OMG I TTLY LUV GERMANS 2!! DU HAST 4EVERRR!!!!" or have been Hitler-idolizing fucks.

Instead of wondering if you're weird, consider yourself lucky to HAVE an interest in another culture! Most Americans can't profess the same. :l

I've been fascinated by everything German since I was a kid. My grandfather was a German officer who was killed in WW2. I speak German fluently. Spent most of my summers in Germany. It is an awesome culture and a strong creative people and the people are really friendly and cool btw.. Unfortunately it is being completely destroyed by this multi cultural EEC Comunity! Germany belongs to Germans! So does France and England and all the rest of them! We are not multi cultural America where people kill each other just to steal their trainers. It is a hideous thought for Europe to become a multi cultural "nation" like America!!!!
I am american and left to return to where my ancestors came from. Blood matters.

The word "über" in this context actually means "too much", as in "Germany's overrated". If you were to say this to a native-speaker, they would roll their eyes (trust me from experience!).

      Just some enlightenment. :)

I have a huge interest in German culture especially, WW2 and the Nazis. Admittedly, some aspects of my fascinations have even turned into fetishes... Anyway, I think you are completely normal.

"Japanese and Germans were the bad guys back in 1945"
bad guys and good guys exist only on TV, in reality it is only important winner or loser

I am a senior in high school and I have been unbelievably interested in EVERYTHING German ever since I was kid. I have always seen myself living there when I leave home. I've been teaching myself German for a while now and I'm even planning on making it my major. I'm VERY happy I'm not the only one who has this interest! German culture is very important to me and I'm glad I've found others that feel the same way.

so glad Im not the only one who feels this way. I LOVE everything german. I am German and love the culture. I watch the documentaries, have German flags in my home, drive a German car, even have children with a German woman. Glad people can be proud of their culture without being flamed as a nazi.
