I am having a horrible time in america

I move to America from Russia 2 years ago) I have aircraft engineering degree from Russian university and I work jobs in plane repair in upstate New York, USA. I move from Russia to get away of Братва) or like Russian gang) situations. I take English classes at local American college. When I move to America I have my cat with me and I bring $11,000 of US money. I make enough money from jobs now.

My cat is dead 3 months ago from eating rat poison( not my poison( and I have not make any allies in state of New York. My English makes for very hard to communicate past small talk and I am not always understand social norms in American culture( also I have no family in country that I am safe to talk to. I have made group of allies online who I speak to in Russian and live in Russia) but if I am to be American I have to make Americans allies.

I miss my cat very much( I was bad in social situations in Russia and that is why I adopt my cat( it is worse in USA because I am afraid I am make a fool of myself with my broken English( women say I come off as threatening( and men say I seem cold. It is very lonely here. I miss my cat( and I do not know how to be warm person.
Sorry for bad English.

I love Siamese cats. My cat Muffin was white. I also had a cat named Whiskers, but also called him Whiskercat. And we had another cat, her name was Pinecone, we came up with that name because she was playing with a pinecone the first day we had her when trying to figure out a name for her.

You should move away from New York. That might be one of the problems. There are plenty of aerospace opportunities in the midwest and California. You might fair better out there.

New York is actually the most liberal place in America, people who are often considered "different" in other places that they've lived will usually not feel like they're sticking out like a sore thumb anymore once moving to New York. There is every walk of life there. There is every kind of person you could ever imagine there. No matter what you are, you will find someone else or a group of other people just like you in New York whether you're Caucasian, black, Asian, Russian, South American, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Athiest, Nuns, Monks, Gay, straight, Bi, Asexual, athletic, film buff, an aspiring cook, into retro, into hip-hop, into heavy metal, into 1970s disco, into Roaring twenties jazz, into classical music like Mozart or Liszt, into midieval music, into Shakespeare theatre, into 1910s Vaudeville, into 1930s Busby Berkeley films, into 1960s Beatlemania, into 1980s WrestleMania, into wanting to travel, sail, ski, explore the north pole or Antarctica or explore anywhere else in the world or up in space, into wearing any kinds of clothes of any style new or old, etc. You will find a group of people who are into ANY of the things listed above in New York, and there will be someone else like you no matter what you are. New York is the biggest, most diverse melting pot in the world.

New York is considered by many Americans who don't live there to be one of the most hellish cities in the United States. It's loud, expensive, the people are rude, there's trash everywhere, etc.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
  • frederickandersen

honestly you seem like a great guy. I don't know why anybody is being a jerk to you. I think people are just too critical. New York is a harsh city.

Your English is really good! I also think you should get another cat. Cats make things better. I'm so sorry that your cat died, as well.

I also had a similar experience when I moved to the United States (I'm from Scotland). I did not speak English, only Gaelic, and it was very difficult to cope with everything. People were very cold when I first came to the US.

I think you should give it a little while longer. However, if Russia is not safe, you should consider moving somewhere else, where it is perhaps cheaper/people are nicer.

The irony is, America's immigration policy is so backward that most of the immigrants who are currently there are better, more hard-working citizens than the xenophobic bigots who want to chuck them out.

Getting another cat will help fill the void of the one no longer there... try looking for events in your area that are geared towars single people. (Not saying relationship, just friendship) the more you socialize, the better your english will become.

It's hard being an immigrant. Some days you feel like a fucking alien and question everything.

Have you looked into Meetup apps and groups? I know it sounds really lame but it honestly helped me so much to just set up social stuff with other people who are also actively seeking friends. Takes the pressure off. If you do this enough you will meet people who think your foreign accent is cool and actually bother to sit through your broken English and get to know you. Once you have friends the place will start to feel like home, and you will pick up the language really fast. All it will take is for your new friend to throw a bbq or something and then bang, you're in. Who's that cool Russian guy over there? Oh yeah, he makes planes. Wow, that's awesome! I'm Gunna go ask him about planes.

Don't give up yet. Force yourself to wait until you've made some friends, otherwise you'll always look back on this as a missed opportunity and regret it. It's not like the visa application is easy or cheap.

I am sorry you are lonely. Moving from one area to another is hard and I'm sure if it's a different country and culture it is even harder. Some things get better with time, but not everything. I myself have 4 cats and a dog. If animals were enough I would be a happy person but I find I do still need friends. In America people like to say "hi how are you?" And they expect you to say smile happily and say "I'm fine." This is not a fun custom for people who are lonely or depressed. Luck with that and I hope you find some friends and maybe another cat.

I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. I hope you can get another baby cat, but this time keep your kitty indoors. My Siamese cat is eleven years old, quite healthy, and he is strictly an indoor cat. I also always get my cats, and dogs spayed, or neutered, because they are happier that way, and don't want to run around loose. It's better when cats aren't outside hunting birds, and rodents, because they can pick up parasites, and it can be kinda gruesome.

I hope you don't mind me making this suggestion, but look around your area to see if there is a Russian Orthodox church near you.

    Welcome to the U.S.A.
For family we welcome all immigrants
    IF:
1 You learn to speak american.
    2 Respect the holidays here.
3 Don't expect this country to be your old one...
If it was so great go back.
If you're ready for a new life. Join the rest of us.
A big mixing bowl is what makes this country great.
Sorry to hear about your cat.
    I know how that feels.
I won't say if N.Y. is good or bad.
It's to cold and crowded for me.
Sorry but, some women are bitches.
    But that's universal.
Hard to believe you're lonely in N.Y.C. but I understand.
The easy solution is to seek other Russians.
    That's what mexicans do.
    They also never blend in.
    Watch t.v., listen to n.p.r.
    Practice english.
    Just try.
    And then.
    Keep trying.
You're American now, we don't give up.

I'm sorry about your cat. I don't think you should go back to Russia, especially if the gang situation means you're not safe there. You haven't been here very long, it takes time to learn a new language and get used to a different culture. You just have to meet the right people, and you will eventually.

Get a new cat/dog dude. That will give you some company. Also I would try and learn English better, so you can communicate to people in a way that makes them look on your favourably. Do you have any work colleagues? Maybe tell them your situation in the same way you told it to us. I think a lot of people will be sympathetic if you're as open with them as you are with us. Explain the situation to them, and then if they are nice about it ask them if they want to go to the pub later, or to get coffee or something.

Join a chess club. Russian accents are a natural good fit with chess players. Chess players will think your accent sounds cool. Don't bother with American women. After you become established in your job, you could get a Russian bride from the Internet. They want to get away from Братва too.

Yes, I understand the desire to participate fully in American society. But America is a nation of immigrants that values personal freedom, and democratic process. Because many of our grandparents were immigrants, we understand that adjustment is sometimes a slow process. We are more patient. We want to encourage you to sincerely learn our history, and understand that you are safe here. You are free to follow your own religion. You are free to speak conversational Russian with your friends. You are free to go make money. When you are more comfortable with this, you can help other people from other countries adjust by staying in these groups. It is this spirit of trust and independence that makes most people breath fully, and work as their heart tells them to. Welcome to America, your new home.

I'll admit that I was going to suggest making some Russian friends here.

I think you have a good attitude, but I think it's okay to have help...there are people who live here that have been where you are, that know what it's like to be new here and trying to fit in, and they can help you! It's just like learning English, you had someone teach you, right? You can make friends that can help you learn how to fit in and how to be an American.
