I am embarrassed to listen to music out loud in front of my parents.

I am a 17 year old male and I don't know why, but I am extremely embarrassed to listen to music out loud in front of my parents so I always listen to music using headphones. I don't find it a problem to play music in front of my friends, but there's something different about my parents. It's not that I listen to bad music, I am actually very picky about what I listen to, I don't listen to 99% of that crap on the radio (AKA "Mainstream music"), I listen to bands and artists like System Of A Down, Bob Dylan, Dropkick Murphys, Tracy Chapman, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Who and stuff like that. I'm not a hipster, trust me, I just don't enjoy things like Justin Bieber or Beyoncé.

So what can this be caused by? Why am I so self conscious about my music when my parents are around?

Best regards.

Ease into it. Try learning to masturbate in front of them first.

Based on your music selection, it wouldn't actually surprise me if at least one of your parents liked similar music (excluding SOAD and Dropkick Murphys). You of course know better than I would, but I know my dad used to listen to all the other bands you mentioned.

That aside, it seems pretty normal to avoid sharing your tastes in music with your parents, as I agree heavily with thisissomuchfun and do the same as you for that exact reason.

I keep my music in my car to a level that nobody else can hear. I'd feel weird if someone could. I don't know if that makes it normal, or makes us both not normal...

I totally do that too! Whenever I am in public places I take out my headphones all the time to check if you can hear it out loud.

    I think that's normal.

Maybe you could find a common ground? My dad likes a lot of the music that I listen to, but I know there is some newer stuff of my generation that he doesn't really relate to and doesn't like. He tends to like the older bands and classic rock music I listen to.

  • Tastes in music is a personal sort of thing and, if your parents know what you're listening to, they can make some judgments about it/you.
