I am a black guy who also happens to be a bachatero. is it normal?

I am black bachatero. I am not dominican by any means if that's what you're wondering.

I listen to and make bachata music with my guitar. Everyone that I've played for loves my songs. Then the questions come:

"Are you Dominican?"
"No"
"Why do you play/listen to bachata"
"Because I choose to"

I grow tired of going through this conversation time and again. I plan to make a career out of bachata and even get signed by a label.

But.....is this normal?
