I actually like honey oak woodwork

I've recently found out that honey oak is severely out of style and everyone pretty much hates it now, and the current trend is to paint over it or stain it really dark.

Regardless of whether it is trendy or not, I actually love the stuff. I love natural woodwork, but especially nice, bright honey oak, as well as other similar colors. I don't get why it is so disliked now, especially since it seems like it wasn't long ago that it was all the rage!

Am I the only one who still likes it?

Stuff comes in and out of fashion all the time. When it comes to something as permanent and expensive as furniture, I would totally ignore fashion and choose things that you genuinely like.

I dislike the yellow color. I prefer my home to look like a lab with neutral colors and minimal distractions.

    • I love the yellow/golden color because it reminds me of sunshine! I love most colors of natural woodwork too, though.

It's nice that you have your taste, & I appreciate that...& honestly, now that it's out of style, you can actually find what would he extremely, extremely expensive oak furniture at resale shops for fuck all. If you like oak...I've seen hardwood oak armours for less that $200 at resale, especially charity resale. It's obnoxiously cheap.

As someone who's done woodworking for years, I can tell you that oak is the worst....WORST to refinish. It's one of the most constantly refinished woods because it's so dated & the grain is so deep that it actually needs to be back filled with some putty shit or painted 55 times until it resembles a more acceptablly smooth wood like alder (oak vaneer- don't worry, didn't bastardize real HW) ... not to mention the fact that it is a hard, hard, hard wood, so it splinters like fuck if you want to change hardware. But it is VERY, VERY high quality, long lasting wood. You can find oak furniture for ridiculously cheap prices because it's out of style. But any real oak furniture will literally last multiple lifetimes if it is properly cared for.

Sorry lol. I've refinished furniture for years, nerd fest

    • This is very interesting, thank you!

What is your take on ash wood? That is what I was told the woodwork in my house most likely is, and it has been complimented several times. It is from the mid 1960's. The cabinets are probably the best I've seen.

I'm gonna wood spazz even more.

So, the "grain" in wood is an actual texture. It's like the history of the tree. When you slice a bit of wood off a tree, the grain is actually raised up. You can feel it when you touch the wood.

I know all the woods. I've worked with wood for years. They each have their own color, and texture, and they absorb stain differently.

When you sand & touch a certain wood, they all feel different. Some are soft & absorb color. Some are hard.

Idk lol I've worked with oak so many times. It was the 80's wood decor. Aggressive grain. Aggressive everything.

80's style blush tinted whitewashed oak will forever live in my darkest memories.

Watch out, I might use it to make an aggressively 80's furniture piece

How about a hutch, with a nice orangey stain...& some shiny varnish...and some polished brass hardware. I may or may not use it to display some commemorative kevin bacon footloose mugs....

guy down the road makes custom bats for mlb since the ash trees are so good locally

Oh I will nerd out on wood for days hahaha. Ash wood is another heavy grain, but that seems to be your aesthetic & that's totally cool. Ash is actually lilac, but it has a very similar wood grain to oak. It's a good quality hard wood, but it us absofuckingloutly not IN

If that's your preferred style. It's out of fashion in modern design, so you should really go thrift hunting. You can legit find beautiful peices that would be worth thousands for absolutely nothing. I'm not kidding. I know wood & high quality furniture. You can find absolutely gorgeous, flawless pieces for nothing if you look in the right places

Search unfinished furniture, shaker furniture, garage sales, estate sales...If you're into the "oak" aesthetic that's a dime a dozen, high quality furniture. Beautiful well made furniture.

The restoration is a business in and of itself, which I didnt pursue after I moved countries.

But if you like oak, there is fucking egregious amounts of amazing shaker fucking notch oak furniture for cheap as balls, holy shit

        • Do you like the look of chestnut wood? I have a large log of it I'm thinking of cutting into lumber and I think it would make cool looking tables.

Whatever wood you like, whatever speaks to you, you should go with that. That's special. Especially if you make it with your own hands...then it's really special.

Chestnut is very good quality wood, amazing in fact. Whether I like it or not is pretty irrelevant tbh. I'm actually kinda excited that you're gonna go through the process of using lumber to learn furniture making. Even if your first piece is a little gimpy, there's a type of pride in building your own thing, and it's fucking great.

Who cares about my stupid opinion? You could literally make your own furniture...how cool is that?

As long as you like it that's what counts! You don't need to be trendy with your home decor if you don't want to be.

Modern house design is absolute garbage. Everything has to either be white, gray, black, or a really gray shade of blue. Also, all the tiles have to be really reflective. I don't like it.

My house was purchased relatively new in 2017, and the walls are painted with matte paint; I hate it!

Flat/matte paint is pretty standard for most parts of the house.

I actually like matte paint, if it's in a good color.

    • Totally agree. Very bland and boring, and those shiny tiles (especially when black or any dark color for that matter) show everything any time they are touched.
