How would our community change if it suddenly became real-life?

For reasons you will have to imagine yourself, say our community can no longer exist in its present form. Each current member is given membership of a social club, a real-life building (let us imagine we all lived in the same city). Attendance is optional but if you did attend, you'd be required to wear a name badge with your is it normal username.

If we were forced to interact as an offline community, would it be any different? If so, how? What would happen?

Well, it is from my understanding that there are many users here that are introverted, so there will probably be a clique of the more social users and smaller micro-groups of the more introverted users and probably a few wallflowers.

I don't think that there would be any conflict, but I do believe that many of the users (if not all of them) would be subject to self-segregation due to their social habits.

If this place was real, I'd bring enough drugs for everyone, man.

I would be legitimately afraid of some of the posters. And by "some of the posters", I mean ItDuz.

Any reason? He seems pretty harmless. He has is ideas about things for sure. Would you have actual fear?

He posted saying he's "done some major crimes", and then when I asked what, he said he'd only name one, and that he burned an office down. He might've been lying or joking or something?

Also, it seems like he posts with obsessive regularity about what he hates about women, and it looks like he's been doing this for a while now.

I think that's a fair assumption, but his obsessive posts about what he thinks is wrong with women still make me really uneasy.

            • So what, i've actually been to prison for a violent offence but i'm not some fucking crazy nut, i'm a normal person. ItDuz is probably a really cool person in real life. Some of the best people i've known were criminals, and besides, we all break the law in serious ways going through this thing we call life.

As long as no one was creating divisions in our society. Ya, suck on that nine!

I would be able to give people two thumbs up....or two thumbs down.

The cliques would become more exclusive than they are in this format.

Interesting Question and I think it would be a neat simulation. Although, the fact that you made it optional to be a part of this social club kind of changes the outcome a bit. I feel that some people might be too timid to appear, while others might be too busy. However, I do think that there would be some changes to how some of IIN users are perceived.

Online anybody could be how they want. I'm not accusing anyone of being someone they're not, I'm merely saying that it is easy to omit pieces of who you are online than it is in the real world. Well, at least it is easier to omit information online than in the real world.

Another factor to consider is the purpose of us to meet. I would love to meet a couple of the users on here. However, the reason that we're all here in the first is to offer advice to people who question their state of normalcy. If that disappeared then this wouldn't be an IIN city. A suggestion to ensure that people still had questions is to offer a room where anonymous messages are sent in a lounge and all of us could gather around the envelope and we all discuss the question in a nice manner. When we're finished we just put the envelope back in the center, leaving the question for another group or person to answer. We write our response and place it next to the envelope.

I believe that if IIN became a real-world community in a place that was close by to everyone, then I think that we would all give it a shot and try to see how we act and appear offline. Who knows, maybe the person that you imagine the user to be isn't quite like they portray themselves.

First of all I think it's MUCH easier to talk about embarassing things when you're not face-to-face, so if this weren't a website it would probably not serve its purpose.

And also, when we discuss the more 'philosophical' things, typing it down makes everything clearer and we can make sure what we're saying makes sense and we're not contradicting ourselves.

I know this is going to offend people but these communities really need to stay on the computer. Not that I am saying I hate anyone on here but the way people act on these type of communities is not something I would like to see in real life. Like on other websites people act overly promiscuous when they do not in the real world. So I think it would be horrible for any internet community to come into the real world. On the computer is where this kind of stuff belongs. Unless we are talking about YouTube since these people display what they are like anyways. So in a way they are that in the real world.

I would not show io so there's one member gone already... I really need this computer in order to speak with you all. Without the computer, people like me and other shy members would disappear.

We'd probably realize the common factor that we all have in real life. Probably there'd be a sector turned off by the loss of anonymity who would shuff off and the others would form this cultish comraderie and tromp about etc

I will NOT talk bout my hygiene, sexual prefrence or relationship troubles with strangers!! Haha theres a reason why theres a lil precent that tells you how normal something is, so that you dnt have to be yelled at in person for being weird or watching ppls 'what the fuuuuck faces' haha

I'd probably go to a bar and hang out with my friends. I think this site would be a whole lot worse if we didn't have the choice to be anonymous.

There would be a ping-pong table at the side of the room, and the winner would get to choose the music :D The introduction of ping-pong would make IIN a better place, but telling stories and polls would be a bit like AA meetings and much more awkward than the online version.

    • I know. :/ I wasn't going to let it drop, even if it had to be rewritten like this. I feel a bit sad looking at it, though, because it doesn't seem to have the spirit of your question, and I half-wish I hadn't bothered.

ah, but it made it. Dunno by what reasoning but the fact it's you behind it makes it better already. I would just feel "bad" if some random person comes up with something that is ultimately similar, but seems "inferior" to my idea, and gets it through. Know what i mean? If it's a "hommage" it's already a great deal less "offending" :)

        • Yeah, it's me. I couldn't see any way of getting the original through and it bothered me. Not for me, personally, but it bothered me on your behalf. :)

I was going to do something rather childish and, if this got approved, post your original story as a reply to this. I'm glad I didn't do that and I'm glad I finally got this through, even though your original was much better. :)

One more thing: english is not the native tongue of all IIN-users. Therefore there would probably appear a couple of language-related groups. A spanish speaking group, a french speaking group etc.

It would obviously change, for example, I know things about some people on here that their friends and family don't even know. People would be embarrassed that we know things that they have told us in anonymity.

I do think we have a great group of people here for the most part, and I would very much enjoy meeting several of the users on here.
