How to americans refer to their own country?

This initially sounds stupid, but, there are many different names for the US, and they're used differently all around the world. But, how do Americans refer to their own country?

"I only really refer to my state" 4
"The United States" 15
"The States" 12
"I only really refer to my city" 0
"The USA" 7
"The US" 39
"The United States of America" 1
"America" 40

As a Canadian, I find it mildly irksome when someone from the States refers to the USA as "America" because America is the entire continent, not one specific country.

North america is a continent, south america is a continent, the americas refers to both continents and america refers to just the united states of america so i guess it is correct and your kind of wrong.

Because of a few losers like this ^ that make the whole lot of them seem like a bunch of egomaniacal fucktards.

And they wonder why people hate on them so much. *shakes head with pity*

I am going to take consideration that there is a good chance that you just found out that Canada is a country, but I forgive you, after all, if it wasn't for people like you, the rest of the world probably wouldn't hate The States as much as they do.
So, good for you, keep it up!

I live in China now, so usually when someone asks me where I am from I say. "America." "what???" "Um, you know, The States" "huh?" The United States" "ze unistas?" "Yeah, the United States of America." "Ohhhh, you mean, 美国?“ Yeah, next time, I'll just say it in Chinese to begin with.

  • I'll generally refer to my specific state. When speaking of the entire country, United States.

ah, I love this country... don't like the politicians, but I love the country.

I always like to say the "Fascist States of AmeriKKKa!"

The REAL United States of America died along time ago no thanks to the Patriot Act and the National Defense Authirization Act. Now America is a police state.

    RIP USA :'(

    • You clearly have never left the United States because if you had, you'd know that it is HARDLY a police state.

Your dumbass clearly does not keep up with world affairs or politics. Because if you did you would realize that America is quickly on the path to becoming a police state.

Also, YES, I actually have left the US. I like to travel alot and have been to many other countries.

    I think they may refer to it as;

    "WE LOVE KILLING FOR OIL"

    Or WLKFO for short.

I refer to myself as being from the US. Several years ago I visited Mexico. On the way way back across the border into the US the border agent asked my "nationality". I was thinking that "American" applies to everybody from Canada thru Argentina and everywhere in between. So I replied with "US", which really isn't a nationality at all. It's a place. I thought it was kind of ignorant for a government official to ask the way he did. But I suppose if I had said "American" he would have known I was from the US, because that's how most of us identify ourselves.

The only time I ever hear a 'murrikan refer to the US as "The States" is when they're referring to the mainland 48. Also, I am severly dissapointed at the lack of a 'murrika option. MURRIKA! F*CK YEAH!

Well then, my educated friend, you would know that most EU countries are harsh police states, when compared to the US. Look at France, I just moved to Ireland from France and that country is ridiculous! They regulate everything to a ridiculous level for a western country. The US is nothing compared.

I don't know why, and I know you are not (when I remind myself), and I hope you are not offended by this, but I have a habit of thinking of you as being from New Zealand. Go figure! What area (N-W-S-E) of the States are you in, I'll try to link that image with you and remember it.

I think you are pretty cool as well. :)

It really depends on who I'm talking to, what I'm talking about and why.

"This is the United States, I know my rights!!"

    "I'm from New York."

If I'm writing it, I almost always write US, unless it's something proper or official.
