How should i deal with anxiety?

My anxiety is not terribly bad at the moment, but it runs in my family and i will have to find a way to control it soon. I know I'll just be put on meds if i go to the doctor, but that is my last resort. some days i do not want to drive over this bridge to get to school and i can't breathe properly and can't focus on driving. Sometimes i cannot eat because i feel like i'm going to choke and die. I didn't think this would happen to me, but it is. any advice?

I had some pretty bad mental issues before, and I was totally against going to a doctor because everyone was telling me not to start taking medication. However, it's ultimately your choice, and I chose to go anyway. I was put on medication, and it was just about the best thing that happened to me. Of course, you can't rely on meds forever, and eventually you will have to find other ways of coping with it, but it's good for a quick fix while you're still figuring out how to handle it in the long run.

Meditation is definitely helpful, even for people who aren't that anxious. But in your case I'd visit a therapist as well. Do not start taking antidepressants without consulting a professional. Good luck.

A couple of things u can try. Like, u talked about fear of choking--learn the Heimlich manuever to save urself if u do start 2 choke. Just google Heimlich manuever and read a lil about it and watch a video on youtube on how to perform it so you'll know how to do it to yourself or someone else if choking occurs. U also talked about fear of driving over a certain bridge. Is this bridge over water? If its fear ur car will fall into the water thus causing drowning-the thing 2 do Ive heard if ur car is falling into water is to 1) roll the window down as much as possible b4 it hits 2) Ur car while float 4 a very short time before sinking, in that time unbuckle ur seat beat then... 3) open the car door and swim out. The reason they have the window thing as the 1st step is b/c if ur car is or is starting to get under water it makes it hard or impossible to open the door b/c of the pressure difference outside and inside the car making it where u have to wait til ur car completly fills up w/water 2 open it. Actually I believe take ur seat belt off first but do make sure u get something open to let pressure change as quickly as possible so u can get out (you can google this topic as well). Also, talking ur fears out with some1 u trust has always helped me in the past--even prevent anxiety in future situations as it helps with mental processing. Hope this help. :-)

Deep breathing, and as strange as it may sound, you should face your fears. It will make you somewhat nervous but you will find a way to overcome it with time.

Thanks everyone. I actually feel better just taking about it, knowing a lot of other people are going through the same thing. Heh, it's like group therapy. My problems seem smaller than they did before :)

All those drugs are essentially the same thing I've taken them all. I have a scrip for 2mg Clonazepam at the moment.

Smoke weed. Seriously. It helps a lot of people with anxiety and is much safer than other medications.

I smoke weed.... Not as much as i used to because i have a family now (more expenses, less time and fear of being judged). it helps to an extent, but not really with driving or dealing with people.

Yes meditation along with yoga will for sure help. It feels great with the soothing music a long with it. Plus faceing your fears will help too. The more you face them the better you'll be able to handle them. :)

It's strange because the things that are starting to cause me fear are things i have done for years, or even all my life, with no problem. Like the bridge... I have driven over it many times and i love it, but some days i just feel like i'm not gonna make it over.

Hmm... well whatever you and your family has I guess just gets worse as you get older. You'll have to just do things to help with the anxiety.

I would start with meditation and mental focus, remember when an attack hits that is just anxiety, breath deeply and slowly, and try and calm down. If this ceases to work, I defiantly wouldn't jump strait to Lorazapam.

I have a bottle of Lorazapam in my bag, hanging right on the back of the chair that I am sitting in, but I never use it. It is a little too strong, and mood altering for my liking. After my anxiety got too much to manage my doctor put me on Citalopram, once a day. It makes me feel like I did before I ever had anxiety! With very little effect on my mind and body, just a little drowsiness the first week.

I told my doctor that I was a social drinker, and she said that as long as the two were not in my stomach, that the Citalopram would cause no problems, and start slowly to make sure my body specifically doesn't have a funny reaction. I now drink every weekend, and live life like I did before, and I feel so normal that I find it difficult sometimes to even remember that I have anxiety and take my pills!

Identify what triggers your anxiety and avoid it. However if you are already suffering from anxiety, distraction always works for me. I usually watch porn, becoming sexually aroused completely extinguishes anxiety for me.

Lately what triggers it is my car, which has a lingering gas smell because of some idiot i let in my car. Even though the smell is not strong, i swear it is killing me, even though passengers think i'm just Trippin. I've been avoiding it the past month and i cannot drive in it alone. Unfortunately, i also cannot watch porn in my car and soon i will have no choice but to drive.

Imagine you being the passenger in a bus driving over that bridge! As a sufferer of anxiety myself, I just totally avoid being a passenger in any situation, I'm positive something will go wrong!

Anyway, I don't take meds or anything. My Mom does, as it stops her heart from racing at times. Whenever I'm in a situation of pure anxiety attack lingering (not that dramatic, but anyway) I just say to myself, oh well this is it, I can't help it, we are all doomed LOL Anyway, that helps it pass. Ironically :)

I can't tell you what to do. Gotta friend who takes the meds, I take care of myself through meditation and discipline. I consider emotional welness drugs to be the last resort, indeed. it's just seems ridiculous that every kid nowdays is diagnosed with some shit, while 20-30 years ago they were taught and discpilined like everyone else and they were fine.

So, I'll take antibiotic if there's an infection, but i wouldn't take this shit.

You can talk to a councilor to organize your thoughts or write in a journal or practice meditation and breathing techniques or read a self help book or shoot up the school or find a creative output or go for regular walks more or even exorcize more or exercise more if casting out demons isnt for you.

For a safer alternative, you should go with herbal medicine.

Meds suck so bad. I used to have anxiety about certain things, well I still do a little. I just take a deep breath, suck it up and do it. I'm a big bird, I can handle it :) usually

This is very bad advice. Go to your local university library and find the section for peer-reviewed medical journals, and look into how much scientific research goes into psychiatry and the efficacy of properly prescribed medication for things like ADHD, anxiety, depression, etc. Then, try to find any scientific evidence at all that shows alternative medicine is any more effective than a placebo for helping people, and compare the statistics for positive life outcomes from people with severe ADHD who take prescribed medication with people with ADHD who use herbs or other alternative medicine. It is definitive.

For example, 40% of all male long-term prison inmates have ADHD, and nearly all of those with ADHD were never diagnosed as children and were never treated.

It's not bad advice. My advice was based on my experiences, as well as the terrible side-effects these creations cause.

That is what i'm afraid of. I took a colonapin to help me cope last time and it seemed to help a great deal, but everyone i know that takes pills for anxiety just seems like there is something missing from their brain. But then i wonder, how would they act without them? And it makes me feel like i'm being too judgmental.

You're not being judgmental. I say this because there are "hidden" and sometimes very dangerous side-effects to medications. If go on http://www.askapatient.com/ they'll tell you the truth on these medications. The last few times I was on them, they messed with things. They didn't help my overall mental/physical health at all and made things allot worse. A few of my friends have been on medication and they become different people when taking it. It's terrible. The best route would be to go natural and alternative. Things like Herbal treatment and acupuncture, etc. Good Luck!
