How popular is u.s. entertainment in your country?

I've been wondering how popular U.S. entertainment is in other countries. It seems the people on this site understand the references to American movies, music, and tv. Is there satellite broadcast of U.S. tv in your country? Do you see U.S. network news? Are American movies playing in the cinema? Are there a lot of album sales of American artist? Is it everywhere you turn or do you have to seek it out? How prevalent is it? When you comment please tell us where you live.

Your question amazed me. I thought something along the lines of "Oh! how cute! He, or she, seems so ignorant about such a trivial thing to me that I thought was common knowledge! I just want to hug him, or her!"

    Absolutely no offense intended. :)

I can speak for the US, some of Europe and South America. I grew up in several cultures and in different countries, but the US was always the reference as far as entertainment goes. Not because it was my preferred culture/country, but because everywhere I went I had access to it, whereas access to those other cultural references in the US or other locations were extremely rare or even impossible to find. Whatever books, tapes, records, comic books I had, I would hang on to very dearly.

American culture has always been a dominant one, obviously because of its 'success' as a nation and economic relevance. So it's always been exported. If you ponder, cultural products are goods which are meant to be consumed. And there you go! The world consumes Hollywood, TV channels, record labels. Before cable and piracy, you had the movie theater (as public TV channels dub films and shows into the country's language), CDs, tapes, VHS, records, whatever. Now it's in your home 24/7, if you choose.

Ew, this is probably one of the most confusing and badly written posts I've attempted to make. I'm just posting it because of my fucking time! *hand over mouth* Oops, sorry. ;)

    Yarr, mate!

    • I'm not completely dumbfounded as to how people understand references to our culture (though i may have came off that way) I know our music, tv, and movies are usually readily accessible in other countries. I was more curious as to what extent in what countries through which media.

Shit load in Hong Kong. American movies are always up in cinemas, American songs are always on radio, people also sing them in karaoke. And sometimes in the news, they report about NFL, MLB or NHL, since David Beckham joined the Galaxy, MLS is also frequently showing on TV. (mostly on sports news)

I've always wondered why American football and baseball never exported well/caught on outside the states. The world seems to have absorbed just about everything else America puts out minus these two things. I know there are a couple of countries that have adopted these sports but they are a minority I far as I believe.

You are quite right, Brazil is famous for its love of football, but I was thinking more in global terms - baseball and American football aren't very popular outside the US except in a few countries, though the world eats up just about everything else that comes out of the states. Anyone have a theory on that?

        Comment Hidden ( show )
  • bigtoy

We have sky tv here in brazil and it's very popular. Among my students, Two and a half men seems very popular, though I don't know why - I don't find it very funny at all. The Simpsons and other cartoons are extremely popular. What is interesting is how different cultures have different senses of humor. Of course, American films because of their large budgets have high status in any country and therefore are probably the most exported form of culture. Music is surprising less sucessful because many people can't understand the lyrics and the rythyms are sometimes unrelated to their culture.

What a very good memory you have! I forgot to add that Justin Bieber was very popular over here among the teenage girls although, like all fads, it seems he has disappeared from the limelight here. American rock and country and western aren't very popular here strangely enough - they seem to prefer their own versions. One cultural invasion we do have that I think will never go away is the hamburger and the hotdog. On an amusing note, Mc Donalds is very expensive over here and something that only middle class and above eat whereas over there it's the opposite.

I'm from the UK and I voted 'a shit load' haha. I feel like British and American stuff here is all mixed up together. There is so much of both that a lot of the time I don't even realise it is American, like the accents and stuff. American television programmes and Films are absolutely normal over here. In fact, I'd say I probably watch more American than British television shows. I love Futurama and the Big Bang Theory. Mum and I also watch America's Next Top Model when it's on. xD News however is always British as we have the BBC and ITV news on the more popular and main channels, and they're local.

It probably is. I think all their stuff is American, but I'm not 100% so don't take my word for it, haha. I'm looking at the programme list for it now and getting Desperate Housewives, 2 Broke Girls, Supernanny US etc. Haha. Loads more, but I don't know what they're about and have never seen them so I can't say.

I live in the UK and I would say that US entertainment, as you call it, is very popular here and easy to access. I guess I agree with what dom180 said in the most part.

I would add that, although American entertainment is very popular here, us Brits tend to complain about the 'Americanisation' of our media, despite us 1) subscribing to it and 2) having -as previously stated- 'British alternatives'.
I know it's a rather sweeping statement, but that's my observation of it.

I don't really like it when Brits complain about "Americanisation" either. 400 years ago, us Brits "Anglicised" America with much more impact than their media is having on us now. If anything they have more right to complain than we do! :)

So yeah, I agree with what you say entirely.

Movies: I looked at the top 10 movies in the UK Box Office right now, and 7 of them were American, just two were British and 1 was French. It looks like the US dominates the film industry here.

News: very little of it is American. You can get access to networks like CNN, but it's easier to find the big 3 UK stations: BBC News, ITV News and Sky News.

Music: Like with movies, I looked at the top 40 singles in the UK right now, and 20 of them were from American artists, and 10 from Great British artists. Others were from Trinidad & Tobago, Belgium, Jamaica, France, Sweden and Ireland. So I guess there's a lot of American music in my country, twice as much as music from artists from my country.

We can get a lot of American TV pretty easily as well, but we often have to wait ages before it gets shown here. Most people I know watch more British TV anyway for that reason. The very most popular reality shows here, like The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent, The Voice UK etc. are British shows.

I'd say we get a fair amount of American media here, but it's not so prevalent I feel like it's forced now my throat. There's almost always a good quality British alternative that is just as easy to get, in my view.

Shitload in Bulgaria. Makes me sick... It's not just cable or satelite TV. Local televisions screen alot of american productions, or imitate them in every way.
With the internet at least you can choose the quality stuff.
