How normal is it to have kids outside a marriage?

I don't know for sure, but signs point to my dad having a kid with someone other than my mom within the past 7 or so years. My parents are in their mid 50's with 3 adult children and have been married over 30 years.

Is it a normal, or perhaps not NORMAL but common, thing for married people to end up having kids by people outside of their marriage?

Also please leave a comment regarding whether you think it's fair to keep this information from their other kids.

      It's just you.

      Married couple. Someone cheats. That someone either gets pregnant or gets someone pregnant while cheating. Couple stays married but one party has a child outside of the marriage (has a child by someone other than thier spouse WHILE married). Get it? Why is this so hard to comprehend?

    It's fairly common. I saw an expert on TV who said that about 10% of children are fathered by a man outside the household.

    That would mean he had an affair right? I guess affairs are very common but how many of them result in a child? Not so sure.

    Woww. Does your mom know about this? I don't think it is fair at all to have kept it from anyone. You deserve to know your siblings.

      Um, duh, I'm talking about married people who end up with a kid from someone else AFTER the marriage.

    i hope i read this right but are you saying that your father who is still married to your mother, had an affair and got some other chick pregnant? yeah thats not right... and does your mum know?

      Yes, she would know, if my suspicions are right. The big fight was one of the first clues. She knew he slept around for years before this with lots of other women, she put up with it (I don't know why, but it's their choice not mine).
