One time in college as I was working on a term paper I kept going down to the cafeteria for more and more coffee. I realized something was wrong when my hands were trembling and shaking and I could literally barely carry that coffee cup without it sloshing and spilling.
Which if the two questions are we voting on? How much coffee is too much coffee, or how much coffee can you handle? I voted on the first one.
Everyone is different. At home, I stop after 2 mugs. Years ago, when I worked in an office, they had coffee on all day, and I'd drink it all day, even late. Would be up all hours, but still have it.
My older sister will drink coffee all day. Her record is still 43 cups, in her old apartment. Was shaking and actually took her shirt off b/c was overheated, but kept going. I remember her sweating as we sat on the couch, makeupped eyes bugging out.
There's a new study released every time you turn around but the last one I read states that 2 regular sized cups of coffee per day is actually healthy. It clears fat out of your liver among other things.
I stick with 1 large mug per day and nuke it if it gets cold.
When I was a kid (about 12) a neighbourhood buddy and I made a milkshake where we used almost a whole large can of coffee to a few pints of milk. We drank it and after some minutes were shaking, convulsing and having palpitations from caffeine OD!
I can't recall if we drank it before or after we were sniffing glue.
Fun times.
These days I like really strong coffee once a day!
I normally start the day with a 4 shot coffee. 4 espresso shots in a single cup, top off with a little milk.
That's fine for me because I am used to it. Given the type of coffee and extraction I use, medically that is the standard daily limit.
I will usually have 2-3 more during the day.
Some people can take more, some take less. Your limit will depend on your own biology.
(I have such a strong cup in the morning as I use it as a migraine preventative. Caffeine is a (tasty) COX-2 protein inhibitor)
About two years ago I had 7 cups of coffee within 3 hours and I had to lay on the floor and focus on not dying. I was having chest pains and really thought that I was going to have a heart attack. In hindsight I was recently diagnosed with general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and mild OCD; so in hindsight, I was probably just having a coffee induced panic attack extravaganza. Good times.
I drink coffee throughout the day and into the night. I have a big Styrofoam cup from the store that I refill from home over and over and over again. I know it's too much and I am cutting back. It's just so delicious.
Coffee's a pretty benign stimulant. Unless you have high blood pressure or some congenital condition, I'd think 4-5 would be fine.
I have, at the worst you get anxiety, a high heart rate, and maybe palpitations--unless you've got a heart condition or liver disease, then it could be quite a bit worse.
I'm not saying there aren't side effects, but compared to other stims (ampetamine, MDMA, methamphetamine, coke, bathsalts) its adverse effects are pretty benign.
Millions of people consume high amounts of coffee, throughout their entire lives, without having any resulting issues; the same cannot be said for people who consume (for prolonged periods of time) heavy amounts of the stims listed above.
