What do you think is an adequate tip? I am a server and i was wondering what all of your opinions were. I think you should always tip at least 15%-20% every time, unless your server absolutely sucked.

Me and my bf once tipped 100% one time. Normally we tip 50%ish. Since it's just the two of us out, why not, right?
We went to dinner on my birthday and we were set inside but I wanted to go eat outside, (it was loud and stuffy inside), so we asked to take our stuff out on the patio. We were the only ones out there and we felt kind of bad. After we moved out there, more people wanted to sit out there so I also felt like we created some sort of movement. Haha. But the waitress was nice and brought us drinks when we needed them and everything. She was pretty cool about it. So we threw down all of our leftover cash for her.

Usually it's on the higher end of that unless it was crappy service.
and if it is outstanding service it may be over 20.
In fact once when I was out with my BF we forgot to include the tip. Turned the car around and went back to give the tip because the service had been very good. :-)
It depends on the resturant.. casual vs fine dining and expensive.. either way its usually 15% if its ok service... 20% if good.. 25% ish if its great service.. and if we are out for a special occasion at a Super Nice (and expensive) one- it can be about 30%... Some places where we go all the time and we always get good service or when we have our favorite server we tip really really good... ** if we have a coupon or discount we still tip according to what the original bill would be w/o the discount... I feel for the servers since I have been on that side of the table..
I guess it sort of depends on where you live and what waiters are paid - in Canada they have a lower pay rate because they get tips - so of course I tip them 15-20%. I have never not tipped, however, I have left lower tips to really bad waiters.
Just before I get up to leave I throw a couple of ARCADE TOKENS on the table before I get the hell out.
It's ridiculous. I just submitted a story about this not too long ago, since I think its wrong to tip someone who's already getting paid for their job.
Actually, people who get tips regularly are taxed MAJORLY on their paycheck. One time my friend who is a server as well, had a weeks paycheck that was only $1 because he got pretty good tips that week. Tips, are our source of income. If we wanted just a regular minimum wage, we wouldn't have picked such a challenging and stressful job.
I usually tip 15%, but if I think the service or food wasn't good I tip less. After all, the tip is actually a "gift" from me to the waiter or waitress and I'm not to give somebody something they don't deserve just because they chose a profession that treats their help like shit! In my opinion the restaurant industry makes a hell of a lot of money and it's criminal for them to treat their help so shitty that they have to depend on the mercy and generosity of their customers to earn their pay. If I had a restaurant I would pay my help a decent wage, so they wouldn't have to rely on handouts from the customers to earn a living.
It's really strange how things get so screwed up sometimes that people lose sight of the real problem. The real problem isn't people who don't tip decent, but rather it's employers who don't treat their help right, and they make it look like the customer is the bad guy!
I went to a diner and my friends tipped 15 dollars. The meal was only 10.
Our staff are on minimum wage and tips on top. Usually waitresses have to share their tips with the cook and bar staff. I always tip well if the staff are nice and loose change if they are grumpy or sloppy. We don't have to tip in the UK if we don't want to.
Normally 20%. If the service is exceptional I might leave 25%. If the service is bad I leave 15%. On very rare occasions when the service is horrendous, like really really bad I might leave 10%.
15%-20% is my usual. Although I did once leave £40 when the bill was £28-50. Partially because I didn't have change and partially because the waitress was fantastic. There when we needed her, but unobtrusive when we didn't.
