How much do you agree with cultural relativism?

In case your not familiar with the concept cultural relativist view right and wrong as a subjective concept always subject to the cultural norms of a society. You run into these people all the time especially at large universities. Something that is not approved in our own culture that happens in another country is brought up. These people are the ones that say you cannot judge people from other countries based on what they do because they are in a different culture and we have no right to judge them. The times I have seen it the most were when subjects such as female circumcision in Africa, bull fighting, people in papa new guinea eating their dead family members, treatment of women in the Muslim world were brought up.

I don't at all and it frustrates me when people put forth such views. 15

    Tolerating all other cultures is giving them an excuse to harm people. Regardless of your culture, you can use critical thinking to decide whether something is wrong or not. For example circumcision of babies, while it may be traditional, it's still mutilation and against human rights.

    Oh papa gee how would you feel if u were a little girl in Africa and you were grabbed by some older man with no medical traing and he took a relatively dull knife and while u were held by 3 large gentlemen he took this rusty unsterrilized dull nice at the least cut off your clitoris and at the most cut off your clitoris labia major and sewed your vaginal canal up. Possibly killing u in the process and probably causing an infection from the unsanitary practice. But no your probably a guy so what if you were born in one of the many Muslim countries where homosexuality is against the law. For th rest of your life you can never have any kind of romantic life if you don't want to face imprisonment or possibly execution. But I know u are dense so here's another point for you do you think 911 was okay and we shouldn't judge the people that did it because it was their culture that led them to do this their a culture a small subset of Muslim culture is in fact a culture even though it is not a country it's still a culture. I'll end with one final not the f****** holocaust please

    Sorry I didn't address your first point you should show tolerance to complete abuses of human rights and regardless of if you call it cultural relativism or moral relativism is the view I am addressing and that was made quite clear in the post

    I talked about this issue with my friend he shares your view that circumcising babies in this country is wrong. However I don't see it as mutilation because their is no conclusive evidence that it detracts from the quality of life of the men that were circumcised as babies. Plus if your going to live in the us I think the vast majority of women prefer a circumcised penis to one that isn't but I'm not sure would have to do some research but I can definitely see your point if view
