I had a friend called Emmy. A very pretty, clever, and congenitally nice friend that I knew through her aunt. Her aunt secretly hoped that Emmy and I would hit it off. And we did. We became close. She told me that she wet herself the first time she went skydiving. Her favourite dress was a green one that she looked stunning in. And she once caught an ex-boyfriend making a date with another girl because she was deaf and could lip read brilliantly. He thought he was out of earshot in a crowded canteen. I don't know what was more stupid. His ignorance of Emmy's ability or cheating on Emmy in the first place. I thought she was perfect.

Emmy isn't around any more because she and her mother (her passenger that day) were killed instantly by a drunk driver who veered onto their side of the road. Because Emmy isn't around to tell you not to drink and drive, I'm going to tell you.

You were obviously over your limit when you typed your question out.

The moment I have a sip of alcohol of any kind I can feel the effect it has on me. Why would I want to drive in that state? I won't even drive when I have a headache (rare but usually pretty distracting/painful when they occur) because I'm impaired.

I took a long time to decide to get my driver's licence (until I felt mature and responsible enough) because when choosing to drive a car, as exemplified by dappled's story, you are literally holding the lives of others in your two hands.

"Don't drink and drive" is typical communication. I regularly have a beer with dinner - or a glass of wine. I've never once felt "impaired" to drive. Having a drink and driving isn't stupid, unless (obviously) you have a sub-standard tolerance.

Most people reach a maturity level where they're self-aware that their reflexes or reaction time is stunted after they've consumed alcohol. Those people are responsible enough to say "I'm not going to drive."

Other people have no survival instinct - and don't care for anyone else until AFTER they've wrecked. Then they're really sorry.

I have cop friends. I've done some at-home research on how much I've drank vs. how high the breathalyzer will go - and I promise you, it takes a LOT of alcohol to get beyond the legal limit. By the time I blow a .08, I'm very self-aware of my drunkenness. So then, I say anyone that gets pulled over and blows anywhere near the .08 mark, should have their ass taken to jail.

Get one DUI, hope to God you learn from your mistake without killing anyone. I think a second DUI should carry a mandatory license revocation of 5 years, one year of community service - and this should start AFTER a mandatory two-year prison sentence. I have NO problem paying taxes to accomidate these people. A THIRD DUI conviction should be mandatory participation in car manufacturer crash-testing. If you die or are seriously injured, too damn bad.
