How many people have been thegypsysailor?

A few months back I made a clone account of TheGypsySailor by changing one character in the name and made some stupid comments on some posts. Well just a few hours after I did this, I went to do some more and I opened a post, and it already had a funny comment from another cloned TheGypsySailor account. Someone saw what I was doing and started doing it themselves. Over the next few days, I started seeing different versions of the name popping up everywhere. I haven't done it myself in months, and though it has died down quite a bit, I still see them every now and again.

So I am wondering how may people jumped on the cloning bandwagon and posted something as TheGypsySailor?

    Just to finally come clean with everyone, the ‘thegypsysailor’ is not a real person, it is actually a software robot. The account profile is pre-programmed to respond to posts that contain certain words, and to create certain repeating stories centred around themes about sailing a boat in the caribbean with a wife on board.

    It's quite clever software actually and uses some fairly advanced Dataflow programming language and techniques. Dataflow software architecture consists of nodes in a kind of graph connected by directed dataflow queues and functions. It cleverly mimics real speech patterns.

    The bot was also programmed to respond with the language of a typical male, in the 60 to 70 year old demographic from the USA. Some code was added where if another user ever posts anything that contains the word ‘God’ or ‘god’ or ‘religion’ the ‘thegypsysailor’ bot will automatically respond with pre-programmed phrases such as 'your evil gawd' and ‘your gawd, is evil, vile and repugnant’.

    The aim of the exercise was to reproduce the Turing test (the test of a computer’s ability to exhibit intelligent responses so that it is indistinguishable from a real human being).

    How do I know all this? A fellow user on this site created thegypsysailor account as part of his studies in Bachelor of Computer Science degree at University of California-Berkeley. cheers guys

    I don't understand how this is funny, or entertaining. It really just makes you look wacko, obsessive, and yes...a bit crazy. Did I mention it was pathetic?
