How many hours of sleep per night, should a person get?

Ok, so I'm finally starting to fix my sleeping schedule. Meaning, I used to go to bed at like 6 AM, and wake up at 3 PM. Now I wake up around 9 AM, and I want to make it 6 AM. I've noticed so far I haven't been getting much sleep, because I'd go to bed at 12...but how many of hours of sleep does a healthy person need per night, in your opinion?

5 Hours Or Less 23
8 Hours 104
9 Hours 29
10+ Hours (WOW!) 23

It depends on how comfortable your bed is.

It depends on your age. Many studies have shown that an adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep for peak mental performance. Many of us (myself included) do not get this but should.

If I remember right teens perform better with 9-10 hours of sleep and senior citizens need less than 8.

    • This year I've only been able to get six hours sleep. I try to get more sleep, but once I'm up, I can't get back to sleep. Perhaps this is why I haven't been performing well this year as I did last year on my college course.

Perhaps I should get some medication to sleep better.

Many people suggest 8 hours but it really depends. Someone might be perfectly fine with 6 hours and someone might need at 9 hours.

If you feel refreshed after for example 7 hours, there's no need to sleep any longer.

  • Different people have different sleep needs. Some people do fine on 6 hours of sleep a night. Others only do well if they get 10 to 11 hours of sleep. So I don't think there's a specific number of hours everyone needs for sleep.

12 hours in a night and I feel amazing. :) I can live off 6-8 but I just don't feel the same.

I personally sleep about 4 to 6 hours a night. It's just me, I CAN'T sleep any more than that, my body just won't. It's fine with me, I don't have a problem with it.

It all depends on what your body needs and what you condition yourself to.

Due to military experience... I have about a 6 hour sleep cycle, depending on how lazy I feel. (If I'm feeling lazy or need to catch up I may take longer)

However, if need be I've functioned on 4-5. And I can pull an all-nighter if I have to.

Why can't we vote 6 or 7 hours?

Anyway, it's not so much about opinion as it is about prevailing medical science. Doctors and scientists suggest about 7 to 8 hours of sleep - any more or less and you're looking at increased risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes as well as lowered immune system and generally increased mortality.

Generally, you should try to get whatever amount of sleep it takes for you to function properly during the day. But if that amount is less than 6 or more than 9, that may be problematic for your health.
