      Most athletes shave instead of waxing. And the reason swimmers go hairless is to increase their speed by decreasing resistance, and shaving off the dead outer layer of skin cells reveals a newer, slicker, more sensitive skin layer. So even swimmers who are naturally hairless will shave the night before a big meet. And cyclists will go hairless because smooth legs allow for slicker, slipperier contact with the ground, allowing one to escape less-scathed in a spill.
