One. I got it almost 2 years after my debit card because I wanted to start building up credit.

I used to have a bunch. Most of them have been deactivated by the issuers of the cards due to not using them. People thought I was dumb for not using them. Those same people could barely keep up with their payments after maxing out all of theirs.

None: I have a debit card which works the same way except I can't spend more than I have in my account

I had a credit card once for a year or two back in the 70's but I ended up cutting it up after going into debt

    • How did cards work back then before computers could give instant information such as available credit? Did the store have to call the credit company to approve the sale?

Purchases were recorded with credit card details on a machine in the shop, you had to sign it, you got a copy, the shop got a copy and the shop then sent the third copies off to the banks, probably by snail mail. This made it very easy to go over your credit limit and not even know you had for a while. It was good for the banks though, because they could then charge you extra interest and other fees.

I never bought any one large item on my card, but maybe for large amounts (in those days maybe over $100?) the shop would call the bank, I really don't know.
