How could anyone have too many books? If they read them at least.

If the fire inspector is issuing a fine because all of your entries and exits are blocked with books,

If your neighbors call in a noise complaint every time a pile of books falls,

If you know what it's like to lay in your bed and be so hungry that you can't climb and navigate over said books to make it into the kitchen for something to eat,

If you are in excruciating credit card debt due to your insane book purchases,

If you took out a second mortgage to fund a large expansion room to your house in hopes of containing the books but ended up with a shitty, cheap plywood box "room" because you contracted as cheaply as possible to use the rest of the money to buy more books,

You might have too many. Consider downsizing.

Doesn't it depend upon how much space you have for books and how much you like to read?

If I lived in a puddle with a small square of plastic to keep my food, water and books clear of the puddle, I might only have one book. If I lived in a library with a Subway and Coke factory next door, I might have at least six books!

There's no such thing. Why are you worried?

I'd say that there's no such thing as too many books, as long as you have a place to put them, such as a large shelf. You could probably make a little "library" room. That would be cool.

When your neighbour calls the cops because behind all your windows are books.

((For physical books, as long as you can read more than a fifth of them before you have to start dusting them - this is more or less for practical reasons. For electronic books, there is no limit.))

On my shelf there are about 100. Those are the books I love and/or have changed my life in one way or another. Everything else I give away.

Unless the books are collectibles--first editions, autographed, especially important to you-- I see no point in having a large library when you can buy ebooks. I have a Kindle and it's ama-za-zing.
