I start dating about 2 months before the break up.

Broke up with my GF of 2 years about 2 years ago actually. Was sad as fucking for like 3 days.

Then I was like FUCK THIS, I'm not letting no cheating bitch make me feel like shit. Hit the gym and started getting with other girls on the 4th day. Life has been SO much better since.

Case by case. The last time it was when I stopped wanting my ex dead.

From experience. I'm a slow healer. I'm in a great relationship right now, and if it ended, I think it would take about twice as long as the last one.

After I've buried the body of the other.

Depends on the length of the relationship. I was in a relationship for just about 3 years and after we broke up I wasn't looking to date for almost 8 months.

Surely your feelings tell you and the relationships vary. Some can end, for example, with no feeling of grief or need to recover from anything other than just to get on, finally, with your life.

If it is definitely over then it's over. I wouldn't start dating immediately but maybe about 2 weeks- a month. Even if i'm not completely over them, I find that throwing myself into dating and fun helps a lot.
Life is too short. Why should I sit there, feeling depressed over someone who doesn't care about me anymore? I take life by the bull horns and get myself back out there.

Honestly the last time I broke up from a long term relationship (about 2 years) was on a saturday morning and by diner time I had arranged to take a new girl out that night who I ended up seeing for about 2 months.
