If you feel like you want to give them something, drop it into conversation that you want to get them a little something. Try and give them an idea of the scale of it so they're not taken by surprise and are left without anything to give to you.

There's no timescale on it but be a good friend and make sure you're not pushing them, and also not leaving them feeling uncomfortable in any way.

I agree, especially if it's an occasion where both parties are expected to give gifts, like Christmas. If you don't let them know first, they won't know to get you anything. Even if you're ok with that, receiving a gift and not giving one in return can be awkward for them.

      • Well, I don't really think that anyone would expect me to give this person anything for christmas or vice versa. We know each other from the university, and even though we get along, we only see each other at the university. And the subject of our conversations is always of a study-related matter. Perhaps it would be awkward no matter what...

There isn't really a set time for me. Just when I feel like we know each other enough. With some people it takes me a while to become their friend, whereas with other people, we get on instantly. So the answer is obviously different for those two examples. I'm not really sure actually, I haven't paid much attention to this before. I usually only give presents to close friends.

For Christmas I'll buy something for my boyfriend, for mum and for my little cousin (I'm her god-mother). That's all. I bake three yule log - one for my bf's mum, one for mum and the last for me. Or maybe I'll do only two. I can't spend much this year.
