How long do you date someone before you decide to meet their family? If you could, assuming they live somewhat near their parents instead of being on opposite sides of the world.

What is this about meeting the family? I stay with them short enough, so that when the body turns up, they won't know who I am.

It depends how old you are. When you are 14, you tend to have to meet the parents straight away because the person lives with them. When the person you are dating has moved out, I guess it depends. The last person I dated for a while, I only saw her mother on her birthday or when she was in hospital (the girl, not her mother), and her father whenever we met up for drinks. I guess it was six months before I met them. Although, due to the complications inherent in every part of my love life, I'd met her mother years before. I'd met her years before too. And I'd met her brother before I met any of them. Weirder still, I met her brother's brother before she met her brother's brother, and I was witness to her seeing her brother's brother for the first time.

    Modern families, eh?

Um I put 6 months at the max. Seems reasonable to me. I didn't meet my bf's parents until after about 9 months but they lived 2000 miles away.

The guy that I am "dating/seeing" sprung meeting his parents on me. We went for a hike in the area where they live, he said he wanted to borrow a tool of some sort from his dad, so I went along. It turned out great, even considering I am older than he is by a fair amount. We all went out for dinner. However, he freaked out about commitment issues and did not call me for about a week after (he is 31). So that wasn't particularly fun!

After the fiasco that went down with my first boyfriend meeting my family, I swore I'd never bring another significant other home unless we were going to get married. I met my husband's family after six months, and he met mine after we were engaged.

Oh, it was fairly fantastic. At one point my dad was waving his ruger around threatening to shoot both my boyfriend and the tires out of his car (in whichever order), and my boyfriend kept saying he was going to call the cops on my dad. My mom ended up in tears, and then she had my boyfriend in tears, and my dad took off in his truck for no readily apparent reason, tires squealing and all. Apparently the fuss was because he was 5 years older than me (I was 15 at the time), but all of my friends/dates were in that age group, and this guy was the only one to get such a reaction.

          Poor guy! D:
I knew my ex's father disliked me but it just meant he never spoke to be. I've known plenty of people who have dated older like that. The parents don't usually agree with it but like... It's common.
