My wife and I have decided we are ready to try to conceive. How long after making this decision did it take you and your wife/husband/partner to become pregnant? Any tips? I already read that most lubes are bad for sperm, so I guess I have to throw out the KY!

It could take months. There's only about a 48 hour window of opportunity every 28 days. And you don't have to screw constantly, either. Your little guys can live in the happy cave for 24 hour if I remember correctly. Now go get 'er!
I have a feeling most people answering have never tried to get pregnant because success within the first month is not the norm. If I am correct a young woman has about a 20-25% chance of conceiving every cycle.
Just a small tip: The sperms with Y-chromosomes are better sprinters, the X-chromosomes better marathon-runners.
So by coming in you without you having an orgasm(which mechanically sucks in sperm) AFTER that, before ovulation, will yield a higher percentage of girls, coming in you and causing you an orgasm after that, after ovulation, will more likely cause a boy.
It's like at most a 70%:30% chance to achieve, but hey, just putting that out there, if for the first month or two you want to try for something.
I'm gladly on the pill, but i think you should look to your family for answers...my family seems rather fertile, both my mother, sister and cousin become pregnant within the first 2 month of trying for a child...7 times total, once twins.
Two friends of mine had to try half a year or slightly longer, and their families also had longer waiting times in general...of course it's also the quality of the sperm playing a role, but just saying that your inmediate family may be a better indication of what to expect-
