How important is your so's line of work?

Have you ever been in a relationship in which yours and your SO's line of work was so different that it would cause you to look down on them or look up to them? Manual labor versus intellectual production.

So long as they're not spending their time doing something massively unethical, I don't care. So it's important, but not really because of money.

    • Money wasn't the issue at hand. The question was leaning more towards what howa said... admiration for the profession (and therefore the person) in itself. I completely agree with you on the ethics of the line of work since that says a lot about a person's character.

Makes no difference unless it's something I morally oppose (which isn't much really)

If she's happy that's the main thing.

I don't care unless the do something unethical or ridiculous. Like politician or a drag queen stripper.
Mine has tow degrees but works in hospital security, a lot of people are patronizing until some crazy drug patient starts trying to beat up the doctors, then they call him to save the day.

  • A person's job makes no difference in how I see them unless they're a guy that's over 21 and not studying and unemployed. I know that sounds sexist, but I guess I'm old fashioned and believe that women should be at home doing house duties and men should bring home the bacon. Anyway, my boyfriend is 25 and he's been working for 6 years. He works in the metal industry, doing stuff like welding, cutting metal, and building things like conveyers, walk ways and other industrial type stuff. I admire him because he's a hard worker and still comes home full of energy and smiles and I know I would never be able to do it. I don't work, and I think that makes me appreciate him even more. The fact that he does something everyday that I couldn't begin to imagine how it must be. The long hours he works when he works over time or on weekends just makes him even more admirable in my eyes because he's truly a hard worker. What's annoying is these guys who sit on their asses after highschool doing nothing.

My husband is successful but he doesn't make much money in his line of work.

    • Do you think you'd feel any differently about him (as far as admiring him as a professional goes) if he were to make a lot of money but not be so successful or in a line of work you don't value as much?

I don't seperate the professional aspect from his being. I admire hin as a person, all bits combined. He wouldn't be happy doing work that was meaningless. He has quit several high paying positions because he didn't like the fine print. If he sacrificed his values for a little bit more money, he wouldn't be the same person I fell in love with. And he wouldn't love himself either.

However if he made more money and his work wasnt a success. I don't hink he would stick around with that job. And in reality, that job would cease.

    • I genuinely can't tell whether you're singing a metallica song or making a statement.

In case it's the latter, what if they make no money and have no success?
