How important is music to your life?

Like the poll suggests, exactly how much does music affect your life, and how important is it to you?

For me personally, I have noticed that it's a big part of my life. I couldn't live without it. And if I lived without it, I would be very down-and-out.

Low- I listen to it casually. Once in awhile. Not a big deal. 12
Average- I find I listen to it a lot. Puts me out or in a certain mood 24
High- Very important. Helped me through a lot. I Listen often 108

I wish "Extremely" would have been an option.

I could live without it, but it would be a massive loss.

I listen to music and make my own all the time; sometimes it's background noise, other times it's centre stage. It's an important thing for me. I have a few friends who really don't mind what's playing, if anything, and I find it hard to empathise. It seems like such a vast, varied form of expression that to not feel passionate about any of it seems the equivalent to not liking any food or sexual activity. Weird.

All through high school, I hated those "music is my life" kids. I just don't see the point. I listen to the radio in my car and sing along to most of the songs. It's not necessary though. In fact, one of the characters in the book I just read had a certain playlist for every mood she's feeling. It urked me to no end.

I explain those people like this:

I think near enough everyone needs to feel that there's something external that understands and accepts them and their feelings. For some people it's their friends that make them feel that way, for some people it's films/movies or TV, for some people it's books, for some people it's religion. For a lot of other people, including me, it is music that makes them think something else knows how they feel, and it makes people feel better about themselves. You probably have something else in your life, some passion, that gives you that feeling.

Some people don't need anything external to feel that way; in psychology we call it having a "high internal locus of control", meaning that you and only you control your own emotions and behaviours. Most people do not have one, and need something, like music, to give them the feeling of being understood or accepted. You can enjoy music as you do without having that connection with it, but other people have a real passion for it because it gives them that feeling; it fills a hole. It is normal for you to not understand people with that sort of connection with music, and for it to irritate you, but hopefully this theory/explanation/thing helps.

Yup, you're right. Thanks! For me, all that stuff is just for entertainment.

Music is often more emotionally stimulating and relatable than most conversations i have with people. I had kind of a rough patch for the two middle years of highschool and music felt like the only thing i could trust, i could seek comfort with out being paranoid of judgement, which i would have gotten from other people. Insane performers like lux interior and iggy pop inspire me too, they take all thier angst and desire and they turn it into infectious art, thier expression transforms waste. It was good to be moved and excited by music, espeacially during times when i found the things in my life fairly empty and dead.

I like black metal when I am taking a massive shit after eating like 5 pizzas ! Really helps me focus on the depth of the stench of rotting salami ass gas !

    Hiya,

I grew up with it. When I was a child I had to be taken out of the circus because a clown put a stereo into a bucket of water. I didn't understand it was one that didn't work anyway and I burst into tears. We never went again.

I get tetchy/snappy if I can't listen to a couple of songs a day. I'm always making songs up. All the stories I write have songs in them; all the best TV shows have got good soundtracks. I suppose I could live without it, but just the idea of doing so horrifies me – a good song by a good band makes all the other stuff you have to go through bearable.

Some people love to watch all the soaps, some people love horror films, some people love painting their nails/dyeing their hair (me) & if you aren't into the same thing yourself I suppose you'd find it weird.

Music is just... I don't know. It's probably one of the few ways I'm able to manifest emotions at the moment. There's not much that beats listening to some liquid DnB, and just thinking about things. It gives a sort of clarity, a way to leave reality for a few minutes, and just chill. Now if only I gained some sort of motivation to start making it.

Ever since I was a little girl almost all the objects I desired were related to music. Mini record players, tape recorders, stereos, boom boxes, Walkmen; which eventually evolved into iPods and such. Can't live without one and my music!!! I feel completely lost if I don't have it.

When I get ready to go out or work etc, have to have my iPod on. When I'm driving, have to have it on too. That's pretty much it though

Vital. Music is one of a small number of factors has made my life unimaginably better than it could've been under different circumstances.
