How do you listen to music?

I'm wondering how people listen to music, since I get the feeling that buying albums on a physical medium is not so common nowadays.
I could have focused on another aspect of that, but for this question, it's about the listening habits.

As for myself, I used to buy albums on cd or vinyl format and listen to them on a stereo quite a bit. Now that I am in a situation without a stereo, I like to listen to music that I already know on the Internet, but in a more disjointed fashion, where I don't listen to a whole album at a time.

By asking this question, I may also be informed about whether albums are losing ground to a song-focused listening experience.

I mostly listen to albums 20
I mostly listen to the radio 4
I mostly listen to unrelated songs from an electronic device 40
other 8

I use radio, youtube or Pandora.
I do like listening to vinyl records but I don't own a player or any records. I used to play my parent's records a lot. I have a large CD collection but most are damaged.

I did have an ipod but it got stolen by gypsies last year in Prague. That was like a death in the family.

I only own 3 cassettes I listen to over and over. John Cougar, Eddie Rabbit and Michael Jackson.

I do have some vinyl because my stepdad happens to have a nice stereo system to play it on. I will probably get a portable turntable at some point so I can take my collection with me when I move out. Buying music gets expensive though, so most of my music is free downloads. I also buy some used CD's and cassettes so I have music to play in my car.

Well, to answer your question, I think people in general listen to music. I've heard that humans have heard such things as music in their lifetime.

Could be wrong, though. Perhaps nobody has ever heard such a thing.

The question was what format you tend to listen to music in, not whether or not you listen to music.

Got my external harddrive full of music.

    Got my laptop.

    Got my speakers.

    All set.

I do still own and buy CDs, but I don't listen to them. It's more like... I collect them for sentimental reasons, to have a physical iteration of the music I love.

"By asking this question, I may also be informed about whether albums are losing ground to a song-focused listening experience."

Yes, absolutely, they are. It's sad too, because listening to albums entails a much more collective and wholesome experience. Not many people understand that anymore. I started off my music collection by listening to the radio, and every time I would hear a song I liked, I would write it down. I had a really good starting collection, but it was very fragmentary. I have developed my collection a lot since then and I love getting CD's of my favorite artists instead of just their 'hits.' I am at a point right now where I can't really afford to purchase all the music that I want though :(

I really can't stand to listen to the radio anymore either, because all you hear on it is the same songs over and over again. There's no variety. Sometimes they will play good songs, but they play them so much that they lose their draw. Even when a band comes out with a new album, they'll only play certain songs off of that album. That gets tiring, and there's so much more great music on those albums that don't get any attention! It's maddening dammit!

Anyway, my typical listening habits right now are my library of music on Foobar2000, Grooveshark when I want to investigate new music, and Pandora when I want to listen to some instrumentals. I'm considering getting into Spotify and some other music sites as well.

I love buying albums. I can't stand buying digital downloads (whatever it is that they call them). I hate buying something that I can't experience on all levels. I want something psychical. I desire it.

I also listen to music on the radio and online. It's a good way to find new music.

Yes to all of them, but the last one would be called analog or SLR (Single Lens Reflex). That's the technology that predated the DSLR, which is the dominant technology now. Shame too, because the SLR was superior, in my opinion.

I'm a music junkie; then again, who isnt nowadays. I have thousands of songs on my phone. I dont often listen to just an album unless I'm really feeling that artist and album.

I had an IPod loaded with about 50 years of great music, but I can't get it to turn on or charge anymore. I've replaced the battery, but it didn't help for very long. I wish I could figure out how to download the music to save it.

As I keep saying. I really don't think I am smart enough to maintain this lever of lying for over a year without making mistakes. So thanks for thinking I am hugely smart, but really, I just ain't that smart. Believe it or not (no sweat off my ass if you don't) right this minute I am sitting on the sailboat pictured in my bio, anchored in a bay on the Caribbean island of Grenada.

Despite what everyone says, I believe you. It's neither farfetched nor incredibly difficult to live on a boat with a pretty young lady. I don't know why people don't think a 60sumthin man who's worked most his life wouldn't have these things..
I know a man in his 70's who works at Sears, lives in a trailer in middle-of-nowhere, and has well over $1,000,000 saved up -after hospital bills from chemicals blowing up in his face. He was an incredible cheapskate and a top salesman for about 40 years.
None of these things are farfetched. It's just life, it happens.

It won't go on, off, charge or apparently discharge. It won't reboot. It won't connect to a computer (tried several cords), won't light up or show up on devices when plugged in. I'm at a loss.

            Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Petrichor.

Can you get it to come on at all? Like, if it's connected to your computer will it come on even for a brief moment?

If you can't get it to come on you could take it into (or send it in to a trusted company, but you must do research to find good companies) a store that repairs iPods/iPhones. They should be able to download all your files because they are still there so long as the device hasn't been crushed. Even lost data can be restored in most cases as long as it's not damaged from water or being crushed etc,.

Nope it won't come on, but it's not dead. When plugged in it shows a battery with a triangle that flashes then goes dimmer. It then comes back, and dims again. It won't charge when plugged into usb or a cig lighter. I have tried a reboot, but that won't work anymore, either.
As for sending it away from the Caribbean, I don't have that much faith in the mail from here, but thanks.

I'm finding recovery software for newer models of the iPod, but I'm finding it a little difficult to find software for your model.

Will your desktop's Finder recognize it as a mounted driver? Because if it does, you might be able get your music back, maybe this link will help.
