How do you judge a 'true' friend?

Have you ever had the chance to test the strength of a friendship? I needed a guarantor to rent a place and my friend didn't hesitate to sign even though it would be her whole monthly wage if I defaulted. She knew hell would freeze first but it made me wonder how many of my friends would do this for me.

a friend has paid my mortgage / rent. 5
a friend pays my utility bills. 0
a friend let my family move in with them. 5
a friend supplies me with food. 8
a friend pays my child-care. 0
a friend helps me care for my elderly relatives 4
a friend looked after my family when I was in hospital 8
a friend donated a kidney 12
other acts of true friendship ... 53

A true friend loves you at your worst. They call you out on bullshit, smack you when you need a reality check, and then make you dinner.

My friend took me in, let me have his apartment when he moved, helped get me a couple jobs and lets me eat at his house when I spend all my grocery money on things I need not mention. Instead of paying him back I think i'll just murder him. That will clear the debt I owe him.

I agree with the previous answers. A friend tells you when you are making a mistake. They tell you what they truly think, even if they think it'll upset you. There are times I'd have done well to listen to my friends and not think I was automatically right. No-one has it all worked out. One brain is too small. You need the wisdom of many. But you should only believe those who have your best interests at heart.

    In a word, friends.

Why is most of it about money? What's money to do with friendship?

Someone who knows your flaws, but they still like you anyways. <3

Eh, yeah, I would NEVER judge a friendship based on financial or material issues alone....I don't want or put those issues into my friendships. That would be terribly uncomfortable.

  • What howmaninotmyself said. A true friend is someone who cares enough about you to tell the brutal truth.

  • I think a friend is more than those things, those seem to be just material things mostly. A true friend listens and tells you when you are right and wrong in equal measure. They also hold you when you cry, help you when you're drunk, laugh with you at movies...

I believe friendship is more about emotions and memories shared than things like money and places to live.

I agree. One of my friends who I would say is a true friend earned this title when we confided our secrets to eachother and the fact that we could just sit there over skype and listen and help without judging really strengthened our friendship. Now I would probably trust him with anything.

friends accept you as you are.. you dont have to pretend in front of them and you can be all yourself !! and it no where needs to lend money i think thats more defined by the height of care and love and understanding.. they know your reactions your habits your ideas and go according to them...for you with you !! when apart from world you sit with them you can utter the stupidest thing ever and openly speak your feelings...
and thew best time.. when they know you'll get angry still do it just to see your that stupid funny kind of face and then to laugh..!! and you can get wise advices from them and be scolded by them like parents or many a times more than them(cuz you share with them the things which you cant even sometimes share with any other ...)

    The first answer is correct.

For my own little story, I went through a break up and I'm not talking a normal, "we're through" and that's that. It was awful. Add that onto money/school problems, life kind of fell apart. She took me in and took care of me and helped me out with everything. I think without her I would still be having problems.
