How do you feel about your boss?

How would you rate your boss/supervisor/leader on being a "good" (whatever that means to you) boss?

1 = Mega a**hole, you're going to quit any day, if you can afford it.

5 = Meh, not great, room for a lot of improvement, but not a complete poo-head.

10 = You couldn't ask for a better boss - they are the cat's a** as far as you are concerned.

Please share your experiences and ways that you think they could improve as the-boss-of-you at your job.

A nine. I'd say he's more intelligent than me. He's generally fair. We have the same background in terms of how we see the world and what interests us, although a different background socio-economically in that he was born into privilege. His jokes are a bit painful, though. He's the clever one, and I'm the funnier one.

He consults me on pretty much everything before a decision is made. I spend about 90 minutes of every working day being a sounding board. It used to ruffle some people's feathers because they get asked for their opinion a lot less frequently. His pragmatism may be his one failing. I know he'd say, "We're here to work. We're all big boys and girls now and I shouldn't need to manage your feelings". Which may be true but when I've managed people or led teams, I've dealt with people as individuals to get the best out of them rather than said, "This is my style. Adapt to it or not, I don't care, but live with it".

I hated my old one. I was fired some months ago. Ironically enough, I'll be getting a new boss tomorrow as I am going to a new job. Let's hope for the best!

I have a lot of bosses...

My actual boss that gives me orders, I would say, about a 7-8 depending on how the night went.

He's a great guy and he lets mistakes fly and I know that if I were to be let go by property management for something stupid that I could not be blamed for (which is a problem where I work) that he would give me a good recommendation and I would have no problem finding another site to work at.

    My manager, I'd give him a 6.

He is very no-nonsense but he can also be fairly incompetent such as not scheduling employees and not making me aware of things that I *really* should know about.

He's a good guy. But as a boss, sometimes I don't think so. He's just a little too lenient with his employees. He would rather be everybodys friend instead of their boss. Sometimes that can be kinda cool, but when its time for him to take action, step up and be a boss, he seems kinda laxed. He has a tendency to fall into the mix of gossip too. And isn't good with making up the schedules. He forgets what days he put certain people on, and sometimes even schedules two different people on at the same time for the same thing causing a lot of confusion. He's a nice person though. Just too nice at times. He lets people walk all over him. :/

Seven. I work myself too hard, I take on more work than I have time for but I pay myself well (when I remember to).

  • One of my bosses is a little eccentric in good ways and annoying ways. Sometimes he comes off as being rude, but I soon realized he does it to everyone all the time. However, it can get annoying after awhile. It's like he's had ten cups of coffee. He walks fast, which I'm glad because I walk quickly too so now I don't feel weird. XP He's a good boss and I prefer him being out on the floor (when certain coworkers of mine are working) in charge of everyone because he doesn't let anyone get away with anything.

My boss is quite the character. He has a giant ego and thinks he is the funniest person in the room. He laughs after nearly everything he says. It's really hard to know when he is being serious or if he's making a joke. He's always making a joke. If he isn't being sarcastic, he is being ironic. He's a trained lawyer so he is often playing devil's advocate. Half the time it's a trick just to make sure you are thinking of all possible angles. I hate helping him replay an argument he's already had in his head. Oh, and he always says, "with that being said."

So, with that being said, he's a good boss, for the most part. (Ahh!!!) He drives me crazy on most days, but he's a good person. He's a little out of touch with reality, and refuses to admit he isn't young anymore. But he has a pug that he brings to the office a couple days a week. Watching your boss interact with a pet is very humanizing.

  • i admire her (and would marry her if i was a man) she is funny, fair firm and predictable, she has a huge coterie of friends and family yet she goes out of her way to help the socially awkward and disenfranchised

sounds like you have a boss boss.

  • I should dislike my boss. He lies, he cheats on his wife, and has subtlety threatened the lives of some of my co-workers.

But he's fair (not in the means, but in the ends yes), fiercely intelligent, strong, and charismatic. I admire that.

Our boss (both his and mine) is another story. He's extremely intemperent and has flirted with several of the women. He's not a good man but not a bad one either; like many in humanity he's "human". But I can't say I respect him.

    • In retrospect I should have added this but didn't think about it.

My boss wouldn't actually hurt anybody. In his former days he knew a lot of mob like people so for him (if you get him angry) the threats are just his way of showing dislike I suppose.

I judge people by their actions, not their words. It's why my 2nd boss means nothing to me, and the first one does.

Despite what he says, he does much good for those around him.
