Spanking is OK. You do however have to follow guidelines to make it effective.
1) It's only effective between certain ages. Too young and the child won't know what's happening, and too old and the child will start ignoring it.
2) It is NOT to be used as an outlet for your anger.
3) Use your own judgement. You know how your own kids respond to various punishments, so you know what works better and what doesn't work as well.

I do not think that people should spank their kids. If your child does something that can harm badly or lead to death, then it might be ok. I do not feel that you should hit children for any reason. I think that it would make your children behave. I feel it would only hurt them and make them not trust you. If your child is small and does something dangerous then a spank on the butt is ok, but an older child should never be spanked. Taking away some of their priveledges is more appropriate, and will teach them respect. Children need to learn to respect and trust what their parents say. The more they respect you, the more they will make better decisions. Physically abusing kids just makes them older people who do it to their kids, and are usually insecure people who cannot deal with everyday issues without getting violent. Violence is not way to handle any situation.

I was always spanked as a kid. I will never let such things happen to my children.
There are other ways to punish your child besides inflicting physical pain on them. Taking away a toy or play time can have the same effect (what you take away can vary with age.
You should NEVER hit your kids. Screw that "spare the rod spoil the child" crap. You spoil a child by giving in to their every whim, not by restraining yourself from hitting them when they do something wrong. When you hit a kid you teach them that if someone pisses them off they can just hit them and they'll get their way. Me and my sister were never hit and we grew up to be totally unspoiled, decent adults. But my cousins were and they STILL slap eachother around anytime they have a disagreement. Grounding a kid and taking away their toys and priveledges is just as effective as a beating, if not more- and much kinder.

I agree, people are such pussies these days when it comes to raising their kids. "Dont hit your kids, you're gonna scar them blah blah blah". No, your kids are gonna grow up and scar society with their messed up attitudes. Thats why these kids now have no kind of respect.
I was spanked 4 times as a child, and I never really acted out again after that. I believe in spanking, but there are defiently guidelines.
Well when I was growing up, my parents never hit me.. but I knew a lot of other kids who's parents beat the shit of them if they did anything bad. It isn't like it will scar you for life or anything if your parents hit you, but it could make kids think violence is more acceptable possibly. I think it's kind of wrong but not that bad as long as it isn't like actual child abuse.
As an American, I think spanking is usually bullshit. I've never had to. But, I respect a culture that uses spanking as a sort of symbolic sanction of bad behavior.
I am a kid. I don't really care. I hit my sister. I never got spanked though. Hit a few times back my sister. Well, I'm tougher anyways. I have a black belt in tae kwon doe!
A good spanking once in a while never emotionally scarred anyone. If you don't spank your kids, they're going to grow up to be spoiled, ungrateful kids unable to deal with adversity. I say spank them once a week no matter what they do - it'll prepare them for the unfairness of life and give them a protective, thick skin. People won't be able to take advantage of them as much when they're looking over their shoulders for the next blow.
I hate children so I would beat the shiiiit out of mine if it was naughty...but it makes me lol to see a parent whack their child. I say get a belt out. Fucking hate children!
